[opensuse] CDDB (freedb) lookup for .wav files on disk
Hello, I have some directories with wav files that were dumped from a CD. They have the enlightening file names track??.wav. If I burn these files to a CD, I can do a freedb lookup on them. I'm looking for a tool that allows me to do this freedb lookup on the directory. At first, I thought k3b could do it, since it has this nice CDDB-button in its AudioCD project window. But putting all WAV files in the project and pressing this button just returns an error dialog with the message "Communication error". Tracing the communication with freedb, it seems as if k3b doesn't send the right disc-id, as freedb returns "Already performed a query for disc ID: 00000000". Can anybody help me here? instead of burning the CD, why not just create the .iso image and use it? -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The program you want is Easytag which works really well for this. However, it seems that the freedb database has been taken over by someone else, (go to the web site to find out) and the database is broken at this time. Supposedly they are improving it, but it has been broken a long time. Here is a message from the easytag owner: (dated Oct 6) ======================================================= If you are using the Cddb manual search, you probably remark that it doesn't work any more... On the home page of the site http://www.freedb.org you will see that "MAGIX acquires www.freedb.org". Due to problem of license, some services have been removed for the moment, like the "search.php" page. This page used for the online search was also used for the manual in EasyTAG. So this feature can't work for the moment. But a new search will be supplied later as you can see in this forum : http://www.freedb.org/en/forum/read.php?1,8 So we hope that it will be available quickly -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Use freedb2.org (TrackType.org) instead. The server name is: freedb.freedb2.org and the path is /~cddb/cddb.cgi Charles -- "The world is beating a path to our door" -- Bruce Perens, (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

tracktype.org resolves and also freedb2.org resolves but freedb.freedb2.org does not. Thanks for the info. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I got the site from hydrogenaudio, but I didn't test it out since I don't have any new CD's. However, I just tried it, and some programs work (eg. KAudioCreator, grip) and some don't (eg. easytag), this is really baffling. Anyway, here is a list of programs that have been reported to work: http://www.freedb2.org/news.html Charles -- printk(KERN_ERR "happy meal: Fry guys."); linux-2.6.6/drivers/net/sunhme.c

Thanks for this hint, that's it. Even though easytag doesn't work with WAV files, it works with FLAC files -- and I want these anyhow. So I just reencode my files, and easytag both adds Vorbis comments and renames them to get a sensible filename. Great! For the record: I didn't have to change anything in easytag, or in any other software that uses freedb. freedb.freedb.org provides access via cdddp://freedb.freedb.org:8880/ as well as via http://freedb.freedb.org/~cddb/cddb.cgi. And one of these two access methods were preconfigured in all my applications; I don't change them usually. I haven't had any problems with the database either. (Well, besides the data quality, but that's a problem as long as cddb exists. All uncategorized CDs are blues...) I have to say that I'm reluctant to use tracktype.org. He doesn't want to release the code for his stuff, and he wants to make new data submissions public domain. I much prefer the GPL approach of freedb, as public domain submissions can be ripped off even easier, c.f. the cddb debacle a few years ago. instead of burning the CD, why not just create the .iso image and use it?
I don't understand you, but I would like to. My understanding: An .iso image is a data disk image and not an audio disk. In fact, it is is one track on a CD, whereas an audio disk has multiple tracks. (Not counting multi-session CDs here; you don't have _one_ .iso image for them either.) Most programs with CDDB support access an audio disk that's inserted in the CD device and query a CDDB-compatible database about its content. It is not possible to pass the image of a data disk to these programs. For most of them it is also not possible to pass a directory, that's my question, after all. So it's not sensible to mount the .iso either -- then I'm as far as I was before. But I may have missed something and want to learn: How am I supposed to use the .iso? FWIW, five minutes ago, I saw an easytag update message on the packman list that mentions gnudb.org -- yet another freedb successor candidate. On their Web site there's no information on licensing, plans, or other related information, though. Yes, freedb is working again after the domain was purchased by MAGIX. The service was down due to in fighting: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=46140 However, since it is now owned by a cooperation, there is no guarantee that there won't be a license change later on. Thanks for the info. Although it has gnu in its name, it is not a GNU site. It seem to have originated from Demark judging from the info returned by whois. Like you, I can't find any licesing info either. Charles -- die_if_kernel("Kernel gets FloatingPenguinUnit disabled trap", regs); linux-2.2.16/arch/sparc/kernel/traps.c
