[opensuse] HP computers?
Hi all, I'm thinking about buying a HP computer (Pavilion P6310de). It comes with Windows 7 and I want to add SuSE to it. Can anyone tell me good or bad things about HP computers? Do they play nice with Linux? Is this a laptop? I installed openSuse 11.2 on two HP pavillon laptops recently and everything worked out of the box - except microphone (I havn't had time to examine the reason as I don't really need it at the moment). I havn't installed the fingerprint reader. But everything else, including the multimedia keys, webcam etc. works perfect. My HP's have Nvidia graphic cards. kind regards Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Barcelona professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com my new blog: http://www.guapamania.com/wordpress/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have an older Pavilion dv6000 that worked out of the box. Suse has always worked very smoothly on it. Just pray you don't have any hardware problems. John Perry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, It might be a good idea to go to the place where you plan on buying the HP computer and taking a look at what wlan card is in it from the windows hardware list. Usually you can get on the internet on the demonstration computer and you can go to www.google.com/linux and type in "'the name of the wlan card' on linux" and see what results you get to see whether the wireless is supported.
I find opensuse always works great on the computer, but getting the wireless working might be one of the more difficult tasks you could face. Might save a lot of grief to find out before you buy the laptop whether it will work or not. I refurb old machines. HP, Compaq & eMachines I avoid. Usually those that reach me I cannibalize rather than refurbing. OTOH, I commonly put forth extra effort toward Dell and generics. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Old HP, where old is more then 5 years, and modest price at that time, is kind of a problem. I can't boot it from USB, the rest works. Higher priced worked fine until ATI and kernel (or xorg) went different ways. Now it is used mostly as a XP station.

The one of recent Dell's desktops works fine (out of the box), but that is my first contact with Dell. It is the Core 2 Quad, Intel graphics, 8 GB RAM, 600 GB HD. I guess that coarse specs tell how little I know about internals. I didn't have to learn anything :) All that I ever tried worked without tweaking. -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Jim, Disclaimer: I work for HP on the linux.helpcustomers Programme. We try to help customers regarding Linux on HP products. Whilst we don't certify or test Linux on any of the consumer Pavilion range, the Pavilion P6310de looks like a safe bet in terms of hardware specification. As already noted the things to typically look out for are the NIC and Graphics Chipset. You can view a list of products on which we do certify Linux here: www.hp.com/go/linuxdesktop Typically we offer Novell SLED on our business notebooks and desktops. In some ways this gives a good indication of hardware which plays nicely. Kind Regards, Lester On 1 Jun 2010, at 16:00, Mike wrote:

I got this box today and plan on setting it up in the morning with SuSE 11.2 64bit and Windows 7 as a dual boot system. Thanks! JIM
