A few weeks ago Beineri hooked me up with a how-to make installation screenshots. http://www.suse.de/~sh/yast2/screen-shots/ It works beautifully except I'm having one problem. At the packageinstallation-step I'm not allowed to make screenshots while packages are being installed. I can however make a screenshot when package installation pauses to ask for a new cd - but the screenshot only shows the popup window asking for the next cd - not the full screen. I've tried numerous key combinations trying to get a full screen screenshot when theres a popup window - ctrl+prt sc, alt+prt sc, alt gr+prt sc, ctrl+alt+prt sc - won't work - either nothing happens at all or I only get a screenshot of the popup window. If I click on the background to put the popup window out of focus, I'm not allowed to take a screenshot. Does anyone know of a way to make the full screen screenshots when there's a popup window (cd-change, release notes, flash license, reboot countdown, etc.)? I'm aware that you can work around this using vmware or probably xen - but that's a bit technical for me and a lot of work. I need these screenshots for a Danish beginner's guide. Therefore I figured the question is community related enough to be on the opensuse-list. Since I'd like the shots to be in Danish I can't just grab a shot online somewhere. cb400f

I use Parallels (http://parallels.com/) and that is very easy to use. Install the kernel sources, do a YOU and reboot if needed `rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.parallels.com/GA/Parallels-2.0.1514-Lin.i386.rpm` Then ask for a activation key: http://parallels.com/en/account/ As root run `parallels-config`. As user you then can run `parallels`. The main difference with a standard installation is that you get the beginning in text. A rather quick movie can be seen on http://houghi.org/film/movie.mpeg It looks very quick, because both xvidcap and Parallels are struggeling hard for the CPU cycles, wich leads to missing frames. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. see here a copy of the booting page of 10.1 beta on vmware. http://fr.opensuse.org/Les_émulateurs#VMware and a free version of vmware (by the way, be aware that vmware takes a lot of power, and the new version lauch some daemons. I usually stop them and start them at need, there is a /etc/rc.d/vmware for that) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Try pressing tab (once or several times) - some elements don't allow screenshots, changing the focus often helps. If this doesn't work, switch to a console and try DISPLAY=:0 import filename.png Regards, Christian Boltz --

This works - pressing tab a couple of times enables me to save a screenshot of the package installation step.
If this doesn't work, switch to a console and try DISPLAY=:0 import filename.png
This doesn't work - bash: import: command not found I'm still not able to make a full screen screenshot when there's a popup window using YaST only - but the most important thing was getting a screen shot of the package installation screen and now I've got it. Should I need more I'll look into VNC and Parrallel So thanks for the help everyone. I considered putting a revision of the original howto on opensuse.org under SDB - but at the status meeting last night there was some talk about not wanting howto-like articles in the SDB - any suggestions as as to where it might belong? cb400f

The wiki maybe? Or am I mixing things up? OJ -- "A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it." (Oscar Wilde)

I have now made a small how-to for installation screenshots with YaST. http://en.opensuse.org/Making_Installation_screenshots Or it can be found this way: Opensuse.org > Documentation > User Documentation > Installation Of course everyone is welcome to enhance it in any way. The "original" how-to can be found here: http://www.suse.de/~sh/yast2/screen-shots/ cb400f

Changed a bit of layout. Also changed /media to /mnt. I forgot how to place it in a catagory. :-/ houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. At least if the slide show runs, it should be possible to make screenshots. I did that in the past to create the web pages of SUSE Linux. BTW: The how-to of Stefan is outdated. The steps regarding moving the files to a floppy shouldn't be necessary if the network is running. IIRC, scp already works at this state to move the files to another machine. Martin

If you got another machine on the network, then do the "VNC remote install" to a vncviewer on the network. Then you can do all screen captures you want using the tools on the remote machine.... Jerry P.S. (Suse docu has description on how to do remote installation)
