[opensuse] zypper dup, 164 packages to downgrade.
Like zypper but I am a little in sorrow after receiving the information, "164 packages to downgrade." For the moment I have left my installation unchanged, especially after Yast told me that everything was fine after looking into update all installed packages. Can somebody tell me if I should downgrade 164 packages? -- Linux User 183145 using a Pentium III , powered by openSUSE 11.2 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop KDE Development Platform: 4.4.00 (KDE 4.4.0) "release 224" 16:43pm up 2 days 18:25, 4 users, load average: 1.23, 0.42, 0.21 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hello, launch YaST repository management. Normal upgrade perform upgrades of package only from its repository (if You have for example Firefox from OSS, it will not upgrade it from OBS - even there would be higher version). But 'zypper dup' does change repositories (so it would install FF from OBS). In YaST repository manager You see priorities. This number can be from 1 (highest priority) to 200 (lowest priority). See also help for that module. Might be You have repositories with older packages set to higher priority, so 'zypper dup' tries to get to versions from this "chosen" repository. Or there might be some problem with missing dependency and/or switching from 32 to 64 bits and back... This happens when a repo is not available by any reasons. Have a look what packages will be downgraded, and you will know what repo is missing. For the momet do a zypper up , instead off zypper dup Greets Michael -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Another reason can be, that you have the KDE4 Factory repo includet. Sombody on the german mailing List just reported, that the version numbers of all KDE4 Factory Packages where set down. His example is Installierte Version ist 4.4.0-150.6 Verfügbare Version ist 4.4.0-2.1 Right now there is no answer on his question whats up. <Sigh> Many thanks for this information. Just as well I ignored what zypper dup had to show and ran zypper up instead. BC -- She was only a whisky maker but I loved her still. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have often wondered myself, like today when zypper dup "told" me some 160+ packages have to be downgraded and a number have to re-installed... And one of them to do with Mozilla just will not download... What I now do, is to run 'zypper dup' and answer 'NO' if I see packages being downgraded or altering "vendor". I then run 'zypper up' and see what this results in. If what shows up on the screen is the same - but without any downgrades and such, I run 'zypper up' and 'zypper patch'. The next day I will invariably find that running 'zypper dup' will show "Nothing to do". Go figure.... Don't use "dup" if you don't know what it does. Ie, RTFM (flipping!) :-) The "dup" does a sync between your system and your configured repos. It will upgrade, downgrade, and remove depending on what the repos have. Say you have 11.2 installed, you configure the 11.1 repos by mistake, do a "dup", and hey presto, you are downgraded to 11.1 (more or less). Use "up" and "patch". Dup is intended to go from one version of oS to another, or for factory. Not for normal use. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
