Re: [SLE] SuSe 7.x and files > 2GB ?
Please elaborate. My understanding is that the 2.4.x kernel series will have support for a >2GB file system, but SuSE 7.0 won't have the 2.4.x kernel. (I saw on the website that it will have an "unofficial" 2.2.17 kernel instead.) Now I did see a 64-bit file system mentioned on the website. Is that the same thing that's supposed to come out with the 2.4.x series, or is the 64-bit file system is something that SuSE's is adding on? Thanks! I don't think so. I believe that feature will be available in the 2.2.4 kernel, but that kernel won't be in SuSE 7.0.

7.0 has the 2.2.16 kernel with the option to put a 2.2.17pre kernel in instead. It does not have the 2.4 kernel because it is not finished. If the 2.4 kernel is released in time to be tested for 7.1 then it will be included then. It was promised that 2.4 and KDE 2.0 would be ready at the time 7.0 was suppose to be out so we were going to ship these pieces of software, but since they didn't come out..we didn't ship them. We got 7.0 in the office yesterday and it's damn nice. The pro edition is absolutely worth what people are going to pay for it. The personal edition is a great starter kit for newbies. I think it will be very impressive...check it out! * Christopher D. Reimer (creimer@rahul.net) [000908 23:01]: -->Please elaborate. I can't wait.. I've used SuSE since 6.0 (when was that?) I downloaded 2.4.0-test6, compiled just fine on my SuSE-6.4. I was concerned about the 2.95.2 compiler. It worked fine. I downloaded 2.4.0-test7, did'nt try it on the SuSE box. Had to play some tricks with modules.conf.. I learned a lot.. I compiled it on a Slackware 7.1 machine (I hope there is an updated sendmail on SuSE-7.0). I set every bell and whistle for the build. 2.4.0-test7 compiled fine too. I got new binutils and modutils. The utilities on 6.4 are showing their age. I cannot get binutils-2.10 to compile on the 6.4 box. some error about a library version. I bought a usb card, a camera and a joystick. All worked with 2.4.0 except the IBM camera (I need a better camera). Your people have done a great job with the usb stuff. There is built in support for the Voodoo3 card in 2.4.0. I downloaded the 2.2.17 released kernel today and built it on the SuSE box. Built straight thru no problem, but missing a lot. I think over the last week I've gotten used to the 2.4 kernel, the stock 2.2.17 is like taking a step backwards. I know SuSE puts more in their kernels than are in the stock kernels. I hope the utils are up to date on the new 7.0. I want 2.4 on my SuSE machines. depmod on SuSE 6.4 is out of date. Vojtech does a great job, I got my joystick working just fine. Anyways... waiting for my 7.0.. You guys do an excellent job, With kind regards, -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
