SuSE 9.0 alsa problems still
I have a Sony PCG-V505BX running SuSE 9.0. Still getting choppy sounds.
I have tested Mandrake 9.2 also and has the same results with alsa. OSS
works fine with both. Also alsa works find with Mandrake 9.1 and SuSE
8.2. I even tried updated alsa with no better results. I am thinking
that this may be some new code in the kernel? I am not sure but its a
shot in the dark at this time. The best thing for me right now is if I
can get other people with the same hardware to confirm this with me.
Every thing else in this machine is working perfectly. I love SuSE 9.0
so far. Its a great release of my favorite GNU/Linux distrobution.
Please let me know if this is a kernel issue. I guess I could always
start trying newer and older kernels. Before I start doing that though I
would love to confirm this with others with same hardware. I have
already tried using other WindowManagers etc. So I do know its not KDE.
In theory if OSS works fine then there must be something wrong with alsa
and the kernel. Possibly something in between. Anyways I will stop
ranting for now and keep everyone posted. If I get anoyed enough with
this I will contact mantel and see what I can get out of him. Nothing
seems to be working without doing some kernel hacking. I am about 90
percent sure that something new in the kernel is causing this to sound
poor under alsa.
Cheers,

How would I go about changing my alsa to OSS temporarily in my
modules.conf. It is very different than what I am used to. Here is the
modules.conf.

Well I just # all the alsa stuff and added the oss stuff instead. I
guess I will have to live without alsa for now. When I have time I will
mess with it more. I sure hope this is fixed in the 2.6 kernel. Anyone
have a link to the SuSE 9.0 2.5 test kernel? I would love to test it out
and report if alsa is still buggy with that too.

Which kernel are you using? I have never had ALSA going choppy on me with any kernels that I have used. Right now I am use 2.4.21 with the CK patches and ALSA 0.9.8.

Try looking for it in: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel Charles -- "A word to the wise: a credentials dicksize war is usually a bad idea on the net." (David Parsons in c.o.l.development.system, about coding in C.)

Try creating an /etc/asound.conf and put something like this in it: ---- pcm.emu10k1 { type hw card 0 } ctl.emu10k1 { type hw card 0 } ---- Of course you should change the name and maybe card number to reflect your setup. I guess that explains why I haven't been able to get some players to work properly. I thought I just had the sound card set up incorrectly. I didn't do any troubleshooting but I ran into the choppy sound using Juk. (I'm only assuming that it uses alsa.) I am running SuSE Linux 9.0 pro and used upgrade to go there from 8.2. FWIW, Real Player 8 sounds great so I'm assuming that it does not use alsa. If I can provide any further info, let me know. (However, I'm a Linux newbie.) Don Henson

afaik, juk uses arts. You may need to tinker its buffering. However, on my laptop, no matter how much the buffer, applications that uses arts (juk, noatun) is very sensitive to system load. That's why I use xmms with oss plugin. -- -- Verdi March --

Juk can use arts or Gstreams.

Set /opt/kde3/bin/artswrapper to setuid root to get realtime priority. I set mine to user root, group audio, mode 4750 for security. If you do this don't forget to put the users that you allow access to in group audio. Charles -- "Nature abhors a Vacuum" -- Brian Behlendorf on OSS (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)
