Hello list, I was just playing around with Knoppix today, and I noticed that it uses Xfree 4.3.x and KDE 3.1.x. I also noticed that they're using a translucent cursor in X. I poked around in the /etc/X11 directory and found a "cursors" directory with several files with the extension .theme in it. I also noticed an entry in the XF86config file where they seemingly reference one of the files. I then proceeded to poke around the /etc/X11 directory in my SuSE 8.2 box and I couldn't find a 'cursors' directory. Does anyone know if the cursor "themes" are normally distributed w/X11 or if there's a way to add them into my SuSE installation? I'd love to have the translucent mouse cursors. -- Preston Kutzner | IT Manager Naeser's Law: You can make it foolproof, but you can't make it damnfoolproof.

The default directory for that in XFree86 4.3 is actually usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/.
Does anyone know if the cursor "themes" are normally distributed w/X11 or if there's a way to add them into my SuSE installation?
XFree86 4.3 by default comes with 2 themes whiteglass and redglass. The settings for which theme to use is set in the index.theme file located in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default. You can find more themes at: http://www.kde-look.org/ Charles -- Linux! Guerrilla UNIX Development Venimus, Vidimus, Dolavimus. (By mah@ka4ybr.com, Mark A. Horton KA4YBR)

Naeser's Law:
Go to /usr/X11/lib/X11/icons there you'll find a few folders like 'whiteglass' 'redglass' 'pseudocore'... there'll also be one named 'default', in it will be a file called 'index.theme', it will have 'inherits=core', and all I did, was change the 'core' to 'whiteglass' (no quotes of course anywhere), then logged out and logged back in, and wallah...a nice semi-transparent whitish cursor (the 'watch' that does the thing like the 'hourglass' does, is a bit too small though if you ask me). I like it, and the red is nice too. Just in case that doesn't 'do it', go into your home directory, in the .Xdefaults and add/change just above where it starts to talk about "Here are the Xaw3D definitions... (give it a couple blank spaces between your new/changed line and the Xaw3D paragraph), Inherits=whiteglass (or redglass) and logout and back in. This worked for me with 8.2, and should for you also. Thanks for the tips... got the cursors working. I'm going to have to look around on kde-look now :) On Thu, 2003-05-29 at 21:53, Preston Kutzner wrote:
