[SLE] 10 Mbit ISA NIC and 100Mbit network ?
Hello Linux folks! I need to connect my junky 486-DX2 PC to my 100Mbit network. Unfortunatelly I couldn't find ISA 10/100 NIC. Looks like they don't exist. I can't use 10/100 PCI NIC since 486-DX2 motherboard doesn't have PCI slots. On my network I use 10/100 Hub and all other computers have 10/100 Mbit PCI NICs as well. If I install ISA 10 Mbit network card in this old junk PC will it slow down my whole network? We're using a 3com 3c515 10/100 Mbps ISA NIC at work on a legacy system.
However, they are not real easy to come by.
Black Box has them for $147. Use www.pricewatch.com for other vendors.
I searched for an Intel 10/100 Mbps ISA NIC without success.
If you do use the 3c515, the person who wrote most of the ethernet drivers
has source posted on his website for the NIC.

Just put in a 10 megabit card. All the others should operate at 100 mb , althought they will slow doewn when acessing the 486 as its only 10 mbts. I dont even think that the isa bus will suport over 10 megabits any way. Thats why you will find the 100 megabit cards are all PCI. Faster bus. You can pick the 10 mbit cards real cheap. Some use a dos program to setup the cards for cable typ and conection ie twisted piar / bnc or thick ethernet , so you may need to download it to a dos boot disk. They do, but they aren't practical (the ISA bus is to slow) and cost allot. Intel does have an ISA 100 NIC running anywhere from 75-120 bucks.

Not the whole network, just the 486 with a 10mbs nic. Any data going to or from the 486 10/NIC will be slower than if you send data to/from anyother machine with a 100mbs nic.
