Howdy, I have been under the impression that I could compile SRPMs for the Athlon architecture, parthly because 'ls /usr/src/packages/RPMS/' shows: athlon i386 i486 i586 i686 noarch But when I actually try it: rpm --rebuild --target=athlon ~jw/everybuddy-0.2.1beta6-1.src.rpm I get the following errors: checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 -march=athlon ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables. Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.20686 (%prep) Any ideas/comments? ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

Howdy,
I have been under the impression that I could compile SRPMs for the Athlon architecture, parthly because 'ls /usr/src/packages/RPMS/' shows:
athlon i386 i486 i586 i686 noarch
But when I actually try it:
rpm --rebuild --target=athlon ~jw/everybuddy-0.2.1beta6-1.src.rpm
I get the following errors:
checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 -march=athlon ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables. Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.20686 (%prep)
Any ideas/comments?
Yes, you need gcc 3.0 to compile specifically for the athlon architecture and
your SuSE distribution is shipped with 2.95.x. Th SuSE package for gcc 3 is
still experimental but you can find it here:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/GCC3.0

But this will overwrite my old gcc, yes? And as I understand it, it's NOT a good idea to be using GCC 3.0 yet, as a lot of things, including the kernel, don't like it. No, that won't overwrite your current GCC installation because the SuSE package will install GCC 3.0 in /opt/experimental

You may have problems to compile C++ code like Qt and KDE but for other things like the kernel you can go safely. I used GCC 3.0.1 to compile the latest (2.4.10) kernel and some GNOME/GTK programs without any problems.
Thanks.
