It's interesting you're having trouble with Adaptec SCSI (I know, that's not the word you'd choose). I'd been happily running 8.0 and 8.1 in a box with an Adaptec 29601N controller for 1 hard drive for a year. To my total aggravation, 8.2 completely barfed on the configuration. It could not deal with the IRQ sharing between the controller and the NIC. After a lot of screwing around, I finally wound up removing the SCSI elements and then the installation went fine. (I'm sure there may have been a way to change IRQ's from the cli, but I'm not enough of a linux wizard to know it.) Sorry not to have an answer for you, but please post back if you figure it out.
