Hi list, I am completly new to the world of linux and quite overwhelmed with all manner of configuration this little beatuy requires. I consider myself a total novice and know hardly anything, but will try and learn as much as I can. Now off to my first question, I am trying to configure my USB ADSL modem to work with suse 9.2. But am having no luck. I specified everything I could during the install of suse. All switches and options seemed to be there but that didn't help much. The manual states that suse only deals with PPPoE but yast has the option to specify PPPoA (that my provider and modem require). Which one should I believe? I have tried to look around in as many option boxes as possible but haven't found any solution to this problem. Is there anyone out there who could lend me some help in regards to what direction I should persue? The ADSL modem in question is a speedtouch 330, connected via USB. I am very grateful for any help you can throw my way. cheers, Mikael

Mikael, The quick answer, simple answer: connect the modem via ethernet not USB! You'll find things work so much better. Very few broadband modems now come with only one interface, so unless your hardware just doesn't have an ethernet port, unlikely, save yourself some time and frustration. I'm sure there are other mails concerning this in the archives, but most, I think you'll find, just switched to ethernet and had no more problems. It should work. Do you know the revision number (or colour) of the modem. I've set up the latest (revision) 4 version of this modem and can send you very detailed instructions on how to get it to work. These are for SuSE 9.1, but should also work for 9.2. -- JDL
Hi, When I installed Suse 9.2 2 weeks ago, I had to install the SpeedBundle package (http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasseur/speedbundle_suse_9.1.html) in order to surf the net. Everything worked fine and smoothly since then...until this week-end. My bloody ISP wrongly shut down my subscription. I first tought it was a problem with my Suse 9.2 so I reconfigured modem, network etc. I've contacted the ISP and my subscription has been relaunched. But now the problem is that I cannot connect the internet anymore :( If I try to connect thru KInternet, here is what I got : Feb 7 22:56:25 linux pppd[6670]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded. Feb 7 22:56:25 linux pppd[6670]: PPPoATM plugin_init Feb 7 22:56:25 linux pppd[6670]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded. Feb 7 22:56:25 linux pppd[6670]: PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options Feb 7 22:56:25 linux pppd[6670]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:8.35 Feb 7 22:56:25 linux pppd[6670]: unrecognized option 'replacedefaultroute' I tried to "grep" everything in /etc, but I haven't found any "replacedefaultroute" option !? And when I do : linux:~ # pppd call speedtch Plugin pppoatm.so loaded. PPPoATM plugin_init PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:8.35 Using interface ppp0 Connect: ppp0 <--> 8.35 LCP terminated by peer Connection terminated. Fatal signal 11 linux:~ # I get disconnected instantly. I've been 'googling' for help regarding this and it seems the problem is linking to Hotplug. Someone already had the same problem ? Thanks Fred

http://www.suse.com/en/company/suse/contact/ Have you looked at the recent posts on USB adsl problem, also about speedtouch? There are several useful web resources. You could also try different solutionsI've found the kernel module the one that works well with SuSE 9.1 and the silver modem. -- JDL

Hello Mikael, You'd think that with the popularity of the speedtouch/speedtouch 330 usb adsl modems that there'd be better support for these under SuSE 9.2. I've found that the easiest way to get my 330 going under SuSE 9.2 was to use the speedtouchconf package from Steve Parker: http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/ Even with this latest package there are problems with SuSE 9.2, but even so I was able to go online with it on my first attempt. The problem was that I had to go through the setup after every boot! However I've modified two of the files (speedtouch.init and speedtouchconf.sh) and now it installs very easily and there's no editing to be done. I've contacted Steve Parker about this and he says he gave me some hints and said that he needs to do some work for the 2.6 Kernel. If you want these two modified files just email me off list. Basically with speedtouchconf you just need to untar it (and possibly replace those two files mentioned above), then copy a zip file of the microcode you need into the same directory (I use rev4fw.zip). Finally just run the bash file speedtouchconf.sh as root and answer the questions. You should be able to check your modem's rev by doing a cat /proc/bus/usb/devices Here's what I get: P: Vendor=06b9 ProdID=4061 Rev= 4.00 S: Manufacturer=THOMSON S: Product=Speed Touch 330 So I have a Rev 4 Speedtouch 330, and it is silver.
