Does the XMMS equalizer work for anyone in 8.1?
Hello, Several months ago when I first installed 8.0, I found xmms (my favorite media player) to be very buggy, so I manually upgraded (compiled) to 1.2.7 Upon doing so I discovered that the equalizer no longer worked. (There were other problems too). I had to swtich the output plugin. I think I finally setteled on aRts plugin. Well, I have just installed 8.1, thinking that the problem would be fixed and to my dismay it is not. Using the default OSS output plugin the EQ does not work. I have also manually installed the aRts and ALSA pluging, and the EQ does not work with any of them. Does anyone know what can be done to make the EQ work again? It 1.2.7's EQ just simply broken? Thanks, JW

I also installed the ALSA output plugin [RPMs available at https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=28610].

I feel sorta stupid asking this but: have you turned it on?
Actually, I was having the _same_ problem you were (i.e., EQ doesn't
work). It's just that I didn't bother looking up the solution until
your post today.
The "on" button is in the upper left of the EQ window. Sure solved my
problem ^-^
Here's the Usenet post that revealed all:

If that doesn't solve your problem, please post.

I didn't see that. I got mine directly from xmms.(com or whatver)

Hehe. Like forgetting to plug your new computer into the power stripe (Or worse, plugging it in, and forgetting to turn the stripe/battery backup on ;-) Well don't feel bad, it happens, but yes, it is open, and enabled (blue light glowing) and I even actaully tried miving the sliders up and down ;-) hehe

No such good luck for me. FYI I have a SoundBlaster Live Platinum wIth Live!Drive ( - which is another story, I can't get the LiveDrive to work in Linux)

Sorry, this time I am not saved today by discovering I was stupid yesterday. Yes, I have tried drastic EQs too, just for demo. It really did use to work :-D Tried the preamp too, no hope.... Any more ideas? Just now I tried all three output plugins again, it is still broken today (that happens to you know... randomly disappearing problems :-) -- ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com
[Yes, this is my second reply to the same message. Just hang on; there's valueable information here.] Two interesting usenet posts: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&frame=right&th=c7e512c1b381718b&seekm=20020128150717.A26340%40jagor.srce.hr#link3 From: Haavard Kvaalen (havardk@xmms.org)
Okay. Any plans to implement it for Oggs?
Yes, we have mostly working code that does this. -- Håvard Kvålen http://groups.google.com/groups?q=xmms+alsaplayer++noatun&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=200210292315.15407.leo%40thewoodpecker.ca&rnum=1 From: Leo Spalteholz (leo@thewoodpecker.ca) Yeah I've been on the lookout for an xmms replacement.. It seems like xmms development has stalled for now and there are more and more annoyances with it (no equalizer for oggs, random crashes, more random crashes while playing streams, your alsa problems....). But freeamp and others just dont have the functionality and also seem to be moving very slowly and noatun is about as unstable as it gets. It appears that Ogg Vorbis files cannot be equalized, or rather, back in January of this year (check date of first post). Judging from the second post, however, equalizing Oggs is still not possible. I'll check it out myself soon... JW, what type of files are you trying to equalize? On Monday 11 November 2002 07:08, JW wrote:

Oooooooooooooooo....... you can guess which type :-/ I can't imagine why on earth they did that! It _used_ to work on oggs -- all my files are .ogg. Yeah, that sucks. As the poster of one of the posts I submitted earlier stated, xmms development has crawled lately. JW, are you familiar with alsaplayer? Although I've only used it a little bit, judging from their webpage, it rocks. Do you know whether it has an equalizer? On Monday 11 November 2002 11:27, JW wrote:

Yeah, a problem here too. I've had to resort to using Mplayer to run my oggs. JW wrote:

OK, so I mainly use it to play mp3s and CDs (and the occasional ogg file or ogg stream. My only annoyance with it is that (with 1.2.5) it doesn;t support the new mp3 tags, which means some mp3s show up as - - (iso as seen below). Apart from that Im very happy with it. Esp. the fact that you can talk to a running xmms from the command line to get it to play diiferent files, go forward and back .. which combined witht he extra keys on a M$ keyboard means it is a quite nice and versatile tool.
