Hello All, I am attempting to install SuSE 9.0 via ftp. Everything works fine until Yast2 gets to the software package selection. Then I get an "unable to read media" error and I cannot go any further. I am using the boot.iso method to boot my machine into the installation process. I have no problems connecting to the server and loading 'whatever' into memory. In using the following mirrors, I got the same error multiple times. ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/i386/9.0/ (closest to me) ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/suse/suse/i386/9.0/ 2nd closest) Is anyone else having this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks, -=Thinker

I just logged into the ibiblio site, and upon reading the README.FTP file, it states at the bottom: If you get errors such as "No installation media found on server" or "Package foo.rpm does not exist" it most likely means that a) The ftp/http server you are using is not accepting new connections. b) You've misconfigured the local network or proxy settings In either case, please don't contact ftpadmin about this since we can't fix your network and/or have no control over how busy the ftp servers are. Perhaps that is the problem?? -- Patrick Heffernan Maryvale Computer Service Phone: +61 7 4661 9006 ---------------------------------------------------------------- On the other hand, you have different fingers.

Not the case. I logged into the server on all occasions and downloaded 45 MB of information to load into memory, setup the keyboard and mouse, usb-storage, etc. It only locked up on the software packaging. I am begining to think the servers are incomplete. I will test the /suse/setup/descr/ directory theory when I get back to my machine. -=Thinker

In almost all cases (given the network qualifier) this is the case. It only came out a day or two ago so as always the mirrors are getting pounded, those that have the updates complete. Currently slurping it down from Italy on broadband that reminds me of the good old modem days and a pile of floppies..:) Best /ch

I don't know if this will help (I have never done an ftp install, and I am still on 8.2), but this sounds like some similar reports from the 8.2 install, both with ftp and onto dvd/cdrw combo drives. I believe the culprit in the combo drive is when it reaches the point to get the package selection, it can no longer read the cd. In that case, some have been able to drop back to a manual install and (in this case) load the ide-scsi module and be able to finish. Obviously, in your case, I'm not sure what module may need loading to be able to continue. Try Alt-F2-4, as they will give you some info. Maybe try at the prompt on Alt-F2 to lsmod, or modprobe a needed module, etc. Just some ideas to maybe help. I think the running log on Alt-F4 will be a big help. ACPI caused some NICs to quit working in 8.2, maybe you need to try a boot parameter like pci=noacpi. I had the same error from ftp.plig.org. It appears as if some of the mirrors have missing data.

I was sucessful using ftp.mirror.ac.uk - just try a different server! ________________________________________________________________________ This e-mail has been scanned for all viruses by Star Internet.
