Hi everyone, Been thinking about USB "Pen Drives" as a means to do exchanges and migrations informally. But I realized that I know very little about how USB Drives are supported in SuSE 8. I know that they are 'hot plug-able' and that under M$ op sys they appear as a hard drive. What does one have to do with SuSE 8 to read and write to a hot pluged USB drive? Do you need a FSTAB entry? Do they need to be formatted? Experianced USB users please share your savy advice. PeterB

Do you mean USB flash memory devices or USB hard disks? In the case of flash memory, they typically appear as a SCSI drive, formatted as vfat. I don't have a USB hard disk, but my guess is they would appear the same way. No need for an fstab entry really, but you can create one if you want, just make sure it is noauto so it doesn't try to mount at boot. You just plug it in, the USB system registers it, then you can mount it. I use a 1 line shell script to mount it to a directory I created in /mnt. Once you mount it, you may be able to reformat it with the file system of your choice. I just left mine vfat.
