[SLE] Help : Unable to install SuSE 9.3 or 10 on my new computer.
Hi, I run SuSE since release 7.1 without problem, but I just built a new computer : - Asus P5WD2 Premium motherboard, Intel 955X chipset - Pentium extreme edition (Pentium 840 dual core with hyperthreading) processor - 1 GB DDR2 memory - Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX Pci express - Hitachi T7k250 Sata2 250 GB disk - Hitachi 7k500 Sata2 500 GB disk - IDE DVD rom and IDE DVD writer for earlier compatibility I installed : - Adaptec 39160N SCSI adapter with SCSI CRrom and 36GB HD I tried to installed SuSE 9.3 or 10.0 (32 bits for beginning) either in normal or in safe mode and the system freezes after : Activating usb devices Activating ieee1394 devices Searching for file info ... As indicated in the SuSe database, I choosed the compatibility mode in order to be able to install on SATA disks ! In order to ckeck if the problem comes from SATA, I uninstalled the SATA disks and kept only the SCSI disk, same result ! Can someone help me ? I'll register my official copy of SuSE 10 and ask for help, but I don't expect a reply. Thanks in advance. Michel. PS : the system runs perfectly with Windows XP.

There's that word again (Asus) and the many problems with Linux compatibility that follow it. That would be the first thing I'd try changing. Many of us have warned others about ASUS motherboards. Sorry for your troubles. Lee

This reply is just to tell you, that I run SuSE from 7.1 with an AsuS CUV4XDLS motherboard without any difficulty. I'll manage to succeed in spite of your advice. Michel

This reply is just to tell you, that I run SuSE from 7.1 with an AsuS CUV4XDLS motherboard without any difficulty. I'll manage to succeed in spite of your advice.

Linux did and does run fine on older ASUS boards it is the newer boards that are a pain in the neck to install on. I have a P2B-DS machine that I have no problems with but I would not buy a newer board from ASUS because of their policy towards Linux users which is -no- support. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Hello, In order to test, I installed Mandriva 2006 Free without any problem, so is it an AsuS problem ? or a SuSE problem ? I'll try other distros and decide which will be the candidate to replace SuSe in the future. Michel.

What _are_ the specific problems with ASUS motherboards? Special hardware or? It's unfortunate that ASUS won't deal with support-requests involving Linux, but there shouldn't really be a need - unless we're talking ASUS-specific hardware or BIOS problems? I've recently installed 10.0 on an ASUS Pundit-R - no probs whatsoever. /Per Jessen, Zürich
