SuSE-8.1: YOU misbehaving?
I’m running SuSE 8.1 and I would like to update to KDE 3.0.4, which is available using YOU. On the “Online Update Confirmation” screen I get the following messages: ------- Retrieving autoyast2: "Auto-installation Configuration System" Error Retrieving cdrecord: "Tool for writing CDR's" Ok Retrieving dhcpcd: "A DHCP client daemon" Ok Retrieving e2fsprogs: "Utilities for the second extended file system" Error Retrieving gv: "View PostScript files" Ok Retrieving mod_php4: "Latest version of the HTML embedded scripting language" Error Retrieving rpm: "RPM Package Manager" Error Retrieving util-linux: "A collection of basic system utilities" Ok Retrieving xfsprogs: "Utilities for managing the XFS filesystem" Error Retrieving yast2-bootloader: "YaST2 - component for bootloader configuration" Ok Retrieving yast2-printer: "YaST2 - component for printer configuration" Ok Retrieving yast2-sound-6615: "YaST2 - component for soundcard configuration" Ok Retrieving yast2-tv: "YaST2 - component for TV card configuration" Ok Retrieving yast2-users: "YaST2 - component for user and group configuration" Ok Retrieving yast2-x11: "YaST2 module for configuring X11 from the YaST2 control center." Ok Download finished. ------- (Note: You may notice that I didn’t attempt download KDE here; The results are the same when I do.) When it tries to download KDE 3.0.4, It too gives me the same “Error” message (where is the descriptive error message? Even an error code would be nice.). Each time I run YOU, it re-downloads all of the files that I have already received successfully and then fails on the files that it failed on last time -- I’m glad I have a fast Internet connection. I’ve tried all the normal stuff: different mirrors, Automatic/Manual mode, different Internet connections, … and so on. BTW: I have no problem installing RPMs myself, but I would prefer to let YOU do it so that it doesn’t try to download and re-install them again next time. I copied some lines from the YaST2 log file below…. /var/log/YaST2/y2log: ---------------- 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdeadmin3 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdebase3-devel-doc 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdebase3-extra 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdegraphics3-devel 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdegraphics3-extra 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdegraphics3-tex 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdemultimedia3-devel 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdenetwork3-devel 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdenetwork3-dialup 2002-10-11 17:17:32 <3> LowellPort(15102) [qt-pkg] YQPkgRpmGroupTagsFilterView.cc(check):156 NULL pointer in group_ptr() for package kdenetwork3-lan ---------------- 2002-10-11 17:22:23 <2> LowellPort(15444) [ui-shortcuts] YShortcutManager.cc(resolveConflict):260 Reassigning shortcut 'H' for YRadioButton "HTTP" 2002-10-11 17:22:23 <2> LowellPort(15444) [ui-shortcuts] YShortcutManager.cc(resolveConflict):260 Reassigning shortcut 'N' for YRadioButton "NFS" 2002-10-11 17:22:23 <2> LowellPort(15444) [ui-shortcuts] YShortcutManager.cc(resolveConflict):260 Reassigning shortcut 'S' for YRadioButton "Samba" 2002-10-11 17:22:23 <2> LowellPort(15444) [ui-shortcuts] YShortcutManager.cc(resolveConflict):260 Reassigning shortcut 'I' for YRadioButton "Directory" 2002-10-11 17:22:43 <1> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaHandler.cc(MediaHandler):112 ftp://download.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/suse/susenot attached; localRoot "/var/lib/YaST2/you" 2002-10-11 17:22:47 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaWget.cc(getFile):125 wget error: unexpected error 2002-10-11 17:22:47 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaHandler.cc(release):180 ok 2002-10-11 17:24:22 <1> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaHandler.cc(MediaHandler):112 ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/susenot attached; localRoot "/var/lib/YaST2/you" 2002-10-11 17:25:07 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaWget.cc(getFile):125 wget error: unexpected error 2002-10-11 17:25:11 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaWget.cc(getFile):125 wget error: unexpected error 2002-10-11 17:25:22 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaWget.cc(getFile):125 wget error: unexpected error 2002-10-11 17:25:27 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaWget.cc(getFile):125 wget error: unexpected error 2002-10-11 17:27:13 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaWget.cc(getFile):125 wget error: unexpected error 2002-10-11 17:27:13 <0> LowellPort(15442) [mediaaccess] MediaHandler.cc(release):180 ok 2002-10-11 17:27:13 <1> LowellPort(15442) [packagemanager] PMManager.cc(poolAddCandidates):203 Going to add 24 objects... 2002-10-11 17:27:13 <0> LowellPort(15442) [packagemanager] PMManager.cc(poolAddCandidates):232 objects added! I can gzip and send the entire log if anyone thinks that I would be useful. Any info would be helpful. I’m a fairly fluent Linux user (which I why I never complained about this in previous versions), but I’d like to do this the YaST way if possible…. Thanks, Lowell Alleman lowella@mfps.com

Dear Alleman and list, Rafael Herrera provided the answer to the YOU errors. Follow the instructions below : Let me do a bit of translation for the GUI users (you know who you are): {case and capitalization matter} Browse to the /var/adm/YaST directory then create these new directories: ProDB SelDB now browse to the /var/adm/YaST/ InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/DESCRIPTION directory (that is all one line, no spaces) copy the file called "description" to the clipboard ( use 'edit-copy' option) now browse back to /var/abm/YaST/ProdDB directory and paste the description file there (use 'edit-paste' option) now rename it to 'prod_00000001' now browse to /var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/DATA/desc directory, then 'select all' from the edit function, then do 'edit-copy' to put all the *.sel files in the clipboard (this will select other files but that won't hurt, you can manually select only *.sel files if you want) now browse to /var/adm/YsST/SelDB and use 'edit-paste' to paste the *.sel files in the SelDB dir. Now if you have directories named IS_CACHE_0x0000000X where X is a number higher than '1' copy the files from the dir IS_CACHE_0x0000000x of the highest number. This worked perfectly for me, and doing it in Konqi made it MUCH easier for my dyslectic brain! Thanks again Rafael, PeterB On Saturday 12 October 2002 22:10, Rafael E. Herrera wrote:

These cp cmds produce errors, are you sure they are correct?
The commands are, all are single line:
cd /var/adm/YaST
mkdir ProdDB
mkdir SelDB
cp InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/DESCRIPTION/description ProdDB/prod_00000001
cp InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/DATA/descr/*.sel SelDB
Someone indicated that if you have directories IS_CACHE_0x00000001, IS_CACHE_0x00000002, ..., you should copy the files from the directory with the highest number.
On the machines I had this problem, an update from 7.3 and another update from 8.0, there was only one directory.
Good luck, PeterB
