Re: [SLE] Updates -- YOU vs RedCarpet etc.
* doc (e.net@verizon.net) [020525 17:54]: ::Thanks! :: ::Now I just have to figure out why SuSE 8.0 refuses to recognize my old IBM ::8512 test monitor. I have tried the setting for that model as well as ::"Generic" ::and "VESA", and have tried cranking down the resolution just to make it an ::easier match ... I am always told "The currently selected video settings ::Could ::not be written successfully." :: ::Any idea what is YaST really telling me, please? Check out http://monitorworld.com/ and see if they have the horizontal and vertical refresh rates for this monitor. You should do this. A. type ctrl + alt + F2 which will bring you to a console login. B. log in as root. C. type rcxdm stop which will put you back on console 1. So hit alt + F2 which will put you on console 2 again. Exit that console by typing exit. Then hit alt + F1 taking you back to console 1. D. login as root and type sax2. E. go through the settings to make sure they are correct. You should be able to set the monitor as a generic VGA/SVGA monitor and plugin the refresh rates you found by either looking at the above url or in the manual if you still have it. After you run though sax2 and make sure the settings are correct..you should then have X working fine. Don't use YaST2 for these things..sax2 is the X configuration tool for this. :) Cheers! -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
Thanks again! Your post prompted me to try different settings (that site specified that the 8512 was a fixed freq model) -- I discovered that it needed to be set for 62Hz and all went well after that! Thanks! doc

Am making good progress, but now am stalled on my pc and my neighbor's laptop. Cannot get them to connect via their network cards thru the Westell WireSpeed dsl box to Verizon DSL. I can connect on my other pc using SuSE 8 or Win98se. We have looked via YaST2 at the Network card configuration, DSL configuration, and Host name and DNS and have guessed at a variety of settings. The "Link" light is green on the Verizon/Westell box so we do have some communication between the netwok card and the box -- the red "Activity" light flickers momentarily when network card runs through its rebinding process (following changes to the card settings) -- I am guessing that this suggests some level of attempted handshaking that fails. Help, please? Thanks and thanks again! :-) doc

Holy circumlocution, Batman :) Any particular reason why you don't just do "ctrl-alt-f1, rcxdm stop, sax2"? I mean why bother with that second vty? //Anders -- I swear I do declare - how did you get that there?

I guess I just like the number 2 :) After all we do have 6 vty's :) -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
