KDE froze and I had to turn the machine off to get back in, but then I rebooted I got a kernel panic. Here is the message, a bit condensed: EXT2fs error (device IDE0(3, 67): ext2_check_descriptors: block bitmap for group 704 not in group (block 5767168)! EXT2fs: group descriptors corrupted UMSDOS msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted Kernel panic: VFSunable to mount rott fs on 03:43 I have a bootable cd for a rescue system this is suse 6.3 I was having problems before and wanted to upgrade when this happened but the cd drive and floppy quit that is now fixed, so I cna proceed to get the system back if I can and grab the files to save so I can do a fresh install What would you advise my doing? Can I get back into 6.3?
Sounds like your root F/S is shagged. Try booting off your Rescue CD and then attempt to repair it with "e2fsck -y". If it can't do that, then try specifying backup superblock locations, i.e. # e2fsck -y -b 8193 /dev/hd?? (or whatever your disk device is) and again with 16385. Run through e2fsck a couple of times to make sure that you get a clean pass. If it can fix it, then this may be enough to mount it cleanly at which point you can try a reboot. If the reboot fails for other reasons, then you can will at least be able to boot off your Rescue CD, mount and backup the filesystem (if there's stuff you want to keep) before blowing it away with a new install. You might even be able to install again over the top with an upgrade and hope it cleans things up! Providing the F/S is mountable that is. It depends on the nature of the error really. If e2fsck can't clean the filesystem, you may want to try it with the -c flag. This causes e2fsck to call the badblock program. Further than that, I'm not sure. Others may have suggestions. Thanks, I was able to reboot. I di have to use the -f flag now my problem is backing up what I need before a clean install of 7.1. I know what I need from /home. What is absolutely essential from /etc, bearing in mind that I would like a truly clean install, without the old settings to bugger things up. And all i have to use for backup is the windows hard disk. How do I copy files into it. It is mounted but I can't copy to it. The line in /etc/fstab is /dev/hda /mnt/win vfat defaults 0 0 I have never found a way to write to that drive, even to copy a file any tools for this out there?
