Good evening I use (not really) OpenSUSE 10.3 (computer is very old). After long struggles I somehow finally managed to install it. Yet, trying to use OpenOffice - newest version, not the one that is on the installation disk; will address this in a different message - I get an error message, telling me that I need JRE, because the one installed (?) is broken. How do I get/install JRE and make it operational? Thank you. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you.
It's available in Yast > Software Management. Just search on "Java" and you'll see a couple. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yup. It's the Java Runtime Environment, and they're forever updating it. An application designed to work with a newer version will consider an older version "broken." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There are currently only two, three at most, versions that matter. 1.4 is technically beyond its end-of-life, but still widely used. Minor version release rarely upset any given program unless they happen to trip over a bug from an older release that's fixed in a newer one. openSUSE provides up-to-date 1.5 (a.k.a Java 5) and 1.6 (a.k.a. Java 6) releases through the supported release repositories, so there's not problem staying up-to-date. Well, that does not seem to everything that is broken. I start YaST -> Software management (which takes ages! I can go downstairs and prepare coffee in the meantime) Next: Warning. There was an error in the repository initialization ... Required file is missing: /content OK Search for "JRE" -> no results (wonderful) Search for "JAVA" -> a number. Check the checkbox next to "Open Office" -> next error: dependency conflict after waiting for another eternity I am back where I started: Try to start newly installed (?) OpenOffice 3.1 Error: requires JRE -> install new under "Tools - Options ..." of Open Office But Open Office does not start. "have a lot of fun" -> where is that fun supposed to come from? Is there really no way this can be done, so that even people without an academic degree (like me) would be able to do that? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is a known (and really annoying) problem in 10.3 that was fixed in the 11.0 and 11.1 releases of openSUSE. It is very fast in 11.x. Unles. you have a specific reason for using 10.3 (and you are on a new install of openSUSE - which I guess you are) you would probably be better off starting fresh with 11.1. I still run 10.3 on a number of boxes, even on my desktop at work (It is a damn good release). Currently the OpenOffice 3.1.0.6 situation is not good on 10.3. oo3.0.1.3 was OK, but 3.1.0.6 gave me missing toolbar icons, etc. (a bug is being worked currently) But to improve the 10.3 YAST SW Mgmt and Update refresh slowness, try this (as root): First disable any unneeded repositories (it will decrease refresh time); then rm /var/cache/zypp/zypp.db (many times the repository cache will balloon in size) This will force a rebuild of your repository cache, and after the first refresh to rebuild it can cut the refresh time in half. (you would make it to the coffee maker, but wouldn't have time for it to brew...;-)
