Questions about Vmware and Win4Lin
Hi All, I am slowly working on moving all my business needs from Windows to Linux. I have a program called MYOB, Mind Your Own Business, it is an accounting program. I want to run it on my Laptop and not have to have a machine running Windows just for one program. Could someone please give me a quick comparison between Vmware adn Win4Lin so far as reliablity for running windows 32 bit apps. I would also be interested in what features Vmware offers that make it over twice the price here in Australia. Thanks in advance for all your help -- Shane Broomhall shanebroomhall@computer.org shanebroomhall@airforce.net

Ok, here's a quick one. VMWare is a giant and requires LOTS of memory (I'd say 512MB is a minumum) but is able to run Windows 2000. If you can settle with Windows 98 I recommend Win4Lin instead. Mattias

Mattias Hi!
I got VmWare installed but I would like to check out Win4Lin, is it possible to run both or do they conflict with each other (the Win4Lin kernel change f.ex)? Don't know, sorry. But as Win4Lin's technical support is very good you could always send them a mail (at www.netraverse.com). Mattias

Hi, There is one problem with Win4Lin that can and will cause problems. It requires patching of the kernel. At present Win4Lin 2.0 will not work with SuSE 7.1 (both 2.2.18 and the 2.4.x kernels). That is why I'm still stuck on SuSE 6.3 although at work I'm using it on SuSE 7.0 ( but is not as stable as my home system which could be caused by a bad CAB file). Win4Lin 3.0 is due out this month which should support SuSE 7.1. Win4Lin only supports Windows 9x. Win4Lin allows Windows to run on much lower spec hardware and supposedly runs windows considerably faster. It is a good solution where you want to run Office type applications. Not all applications will run using Win4Lin. Suggest you check out www.netraverse.com for details on Win4Lin 3.0 for further info. BTW I have not tried Vmware. That's what I was afraid of, lucky I didn't try as I got 7.1 here.

I just noticed that too, so I'll wait to give it a try untill then...:-)

If it can run Excel with reasonable speed it would be fine for me, I have to use Excel at work and it's impossible to get the workbooks *clean* when I open them in StarOffice or Gnumeric and then move them back to Excel.
Suggest you check out www.netraverse.com for details on Win4Lin 3.0 for further info.
BTW I have not tried Vmware. On my homebox (with 128RAM, 466Mhz) with Win98 in VmWare in KDE; it's rather slow, with W2k it's veeery slooow...:-/

You can down load a trial version, but as the Kernel has to be patched you have to be reasonably committed to go thru the install.

Excel, Word and all other Office programs work well with win4lin and at about the same speed as native Win 98 from what I can tell. I use Excel a fair bit given all the macros I use and have not had time to look into the macros for staroffice.

Thats why I have kept with Win4Lin.

There is a 30 day trial version of VMware on the SuSE 7.x CDs. Try
before you buy. I did this year's taxes using VMware and TurboTax.
No problems. The problems I have had are: don't switch desktops or
minimize/maximize while booting, running two virtual machines at once
is risky (different OSs: Win98 and FreeBSD 4.2), SNMP doesn't
recognize the host-only network and keep statistics for it. It was
slow with only 128MB of memory (win98 uses 190MB of virtual memory
just to boot to the desktop). With 384MB, Win98 runs at near native
speeds. I haven't used Win4Lin.
