After performing a fresh install of 8.1, I'm unable to mount any CDs in my CD-R drive - an ATAPI drive (hdd) that works perfectly with my 7.3 installation. I also have a DVD-ROM drive (hdc) that I finally got to work after following the advice in a recent posting to this list (pointing the links from /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd to /dev/sr0). Unfortunately, even though I've changed the link for /dev/cdrecorder to point to /dev/sr1, I am still unable to mount CDs in the CD-R drive. Strangely, even though the DVD drive is /dev/sr0, it is also seen as /dev/sr1. In other words, if I pop a CD into the DVD drive (which is hdc and works as /dev/sr0), and I attempt to mount /dev/sr1 (which should be pointing to the CD-R drive on hdd), it actually mounts the CD inside of the DVD drive! How can this be? And how can I correct things? For the record, if I run 'cdrecord -scanbus' with my 7.3 configuration (which used insmod to start the scsi emulation), it lists the CD-R drive at: 0,0,0 0) 'Memorex ' '40MAXX 1248AJ ' 'ZWS1' Removable CD-ROM whereas the 8.1 system lists the DVD drive at 0,0,0 and bumps the CD-R drive up to 0,1,0: 0,1,0 1) 'Memorex ' '40MAXX 1248AJ ' 'ZWS1' Removable CD-ROM At this point, I'm quite less than impressed with 8.1; between this silliness and the move forward in GCC compiler (with all that apparently entails), I'm pretty much thinking I'll forget about the $50 I just spent on the upgrade and just stick with 7.3. At least it works. - Thomas Long -- Using SuSE Linux 7.3 ------------------------------------------------------- -- Using SuSE Linux 7.3

Hi Thomas, Have a look in my previous posting on this issue. The symlinks in 8.1 are wrong. # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom # ln -sf /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrecorder Should fix it, if your DVD is 'hdc' and your CD-RW is 'hdd' Cheers .... Hello Wolfi I missed your previous posting, and have now tried your 'fix' for the wrong symlinks. It works, and your solution is very much better than my long-winded one. I still get the error messages I mentioned in my posting. Are they of importance? If so, how do I fix them, please? Many thanks Keith
