To the group, For what it's worth. A while back I tried to get SuSE 7.2 to recognize a usb mouse which was plugged into a usb port. I got many suggestions from the list, but no matter what I tried it just wouldn't work. I took a little poll on this list and no one was using a usb port. Everyone used a ps/2 port. I just installed SuSE 7.2 on a machine that has the same kind of mouse, but it's plugged into the ps/2 port, and the mouse was recognized and works ok. The wheel even works. The conclusion I've come to is that you can't use a mouse plugged into a usb port. Ron -- Ron White Amateur Radio: WA0MWW Running SuSE Linux 7.2 Personal
I am using a Logitech optical USB mouse plugged into the USB port right now and it works apart from the wheel. It even works when I plug the USB hub in my monitor into the USB port and plug the mouse into one of the monitor USB ports. This is with SuSE 7.2 Prof. - as far as I remeber all I had to do on installation was check that USB was activated, but I didn't make notes of what I did unfortunately. 1 -> make sure you have ZAxisMapping in your XF86Config file (sax2, number of mouse buttons 5 or add Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" to the mouse section of that file (and restart X ;) ) 2 -> make sure your window manager knows what to do with the button 4 (up) and button 5(down) events. KDE 2 does this automatically for you. I have a ps2 mouse (logitech wheel of some sort) and a usb wacom graphire tablet (pen & mouse) running on 7.2. When I installed suse it was a problem figuring out how to get my mice recognized during install and then configured afterwords but eventually I figured it out (after reinstalling over and over again). The scrollwheel still isn't working on the wacom but other than that everything works. the bottomline (to me) is that SAX2 SUX heres a piece of my /etc/X11/XF86config file, maybe this will lead you to a solution. Hi, List: As I said in another reply to this thread, my Logitech MouseMan Wheel is plugged into a USB port and works fine except it doesn't scroll. My /etc/X11/XF86Config file (pointing device section) appears below. Note that opposite "Option Protocol" it says "imps/2." I would rather not screw around with YaST here, but prefer to edit the appropriate file directly. In addition to the changes suggested by Dave Herman, what should replace the "protocol imps/2" part of the file to make it consistent with the parameters required by a USB device? Here's my current /etc/X11/XF86Config: Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50" Option "InputFashion" "Mouse" Option "Name" "Autodetection" Option "Protocol" "imps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" EndSection In addition, I have a second mouse, identical to the one I mentioned above, on a second Linux box. It is plugged into a ps/2 port. It plays like a Wurlitzer, and it also *scrolls*. I have SuSE 7.2 Personal installed on that machine. -- Glenn Williams - n0hn@abq-nm.com Registered Linux User #135678 Powered by SuSE 7.2 Linux Professional

Hi, Ron: Well, true, except for one detail. I am using a Logitech MouseMan Wheel, optical mouse with cord, Model M-BD53 on this machine. I am running SuSE 7.2 Pro and the machine is a home-brew Pentium 3, 450 MHz. The mouse is plugged into a USB port. It does everything but make the coffee and *scroll* - and I am fairly certain a little time spent on editing one of the XF86 configuration files would fix that problem. (Not sure about the coffee-making feature - I might wind up with espresso.) The question is: *which* of the XF86 configuration files is the appropriate one to edit for this version of SuSE Linux. There are at least two. Maybe someone could point us to the appropriate file to edit. Seems to me you said you picked the wrong file, and when you edited it, the mouse no longer worked. Then again, there may be a difference between SuSE 7.2 Pro and 7.2 Personal. Regards, Glenn -- Glenn Williams - n0hn@abq-nm.com Registered Linux User #135678 Powered by SuSE 7.2 Linux Professional

Maybe the difference is in the fact that the two people having success with their mice plugged into a usb port are running the pro version. Ron -- Ron White Amateur Radio: WA0MWW Running SuSE Linux 7.2 Personal

I have had the same experience. I have never had success using a USB mouse in Linux. I can't say for sure about 7.2, since I didn't even bother trying. I just connect my MS Intellimouse Optical to the PS2 port since I know for sure it will work there. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional KDE 2.1.2 KMail 1.2 Bryan S. Hi I'm using a mitsumi-compliant optical USB-mouse, and 7.2 installation did regognice it, and it is working 100%. I have done zero changes go mouse settings. With 7.0 I was not successful to use USB-mouse, so I just used the PS/2 mouse. So with 7.2 there should be no problem I think. Jaska. Viestissä Maanantai 24.
