[opensuse] Installing jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin
Hy, I'm using openSUSE 10.2 I downloaded jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin and followed the instructions to install. So I changed to su ,without that it did not work, gave chmod a+x jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin followed by ./ jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin , which did not work. So I tried sh jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin That gave the reaction line 305 ./install.sfx.17957: access refused What should be the right approach? Thanks, André den Oudsten -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm willing to bet that your home partition is mounted with the "noexec" option. What is the output from "cat /proc/mounts" and which is the partition where you are trying to do this? I'm sorry but the look and feel of the installer has about a *ZERO NEED* in this world. First people complain about the boot splash when they should see it less than once a week for a minute at most. So who cares what it looks like? Now you're asking SuSE to spend time on the look and feel of the installer which people only see for an hour or so ONCE EVERY SIX MONTHS at most. Are you going to stare at the screen for an hour?? No, you're going to go off an do other things while the installer does its thing. Who cares??? Oh, did I mention I think this would be a waste of valuable developer time? :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, after you get things configured after a new install. At least in my case it's almost a constant for the first couple weeks.

Au contraire... for people like me who boot daily, the splash screen makes an impact. I'm not so sure Sun gives easy to follow instructions. I just went thru installing Java and Tomcat on a recent CentOS (Redhat) system. I was shocked how hard it was to accomplish. Hi. I made a request to include it in the distribution ... sorry: My fault. I hope it will be out in factory (nonoss) soon. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I have had java-6 working on many distros 64-bit and 32-bit, usually,
its as simply as making the .bin file executable and then running the
.bin.
You alkso haver the choice of downloading an rpm or tar version of the
release (I forgot which one). I suggest doing this install the new
java 1.6 put do it without overwriting or replacing the old one. As I
understand it linux has many places where the new java would need to
be set. I prefer to have certain apps access the new java in
/usr/local and let the system and everything else use the old one
until a supported release is sent out by the distro.
Regards!

But that's just a hack if your distro uses /etc/alternatives (which I personally consider unspeakably evil, BTW). A SUSE-fied package that generates the required forest of symlinks will make it much easier to switch back and forth between Java 5 and Java 6 during testing. -- Glenn Holmer (Q-Link: ShadowM) http://www.lyonlabs.org/commodore/c64.html -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I agree it is a hack, but I never understood the whole
/etc/alternatives thing, it really seemed evil to me as well :) This
way, I had netbeans, and all my apps using the new java, without all
the hassle
