[opensuse] USB not working in VBox
Dear All, Recently I have installed Win 7 Enterprise Edition in Sun's VirtualBox, but cannot get USB to work. In Settings/USB devices it correctly states that it is a Kingston Data Traveller, but this line is greyed out. Down at the status bar after pulling the cursor over the USB stick icon a popup says that there is no USB devices plugged. Are there further settings needed or what did I miss? Thanks, OszkoA

Yes, I did so. Both of my pendrives are listed in Devices-> USB Devices. But they are greyed out. Moving the cursor over the names shows some info (Vendor, product etc.). The bottom line is Status: unavailable (or something similar). The USB icon at the bottom of the window says there is no USB device plugged/mounted. OszkoA

This hasn't been necessary for a number of releases. I have asked the OP twice for which version he has installed. There is a binary version and and OSE version on the download page. If he installed the OSE version USB support is not available. There are two versions: OSE which is the open source edition in which the USB devices are not expected to work and the PUEL version in which the USB should work. I toyed with the PUEL version and windows7 guest and USB a few weeks ago but could not get them to work. However, USB worked perfectly in other guests such as windows xp. Hope that helps. Also, If you're using an old (Sun branded) version of VirtualBox,
check to make sure that you're tweaking /etc/fstab if needed - check
the end-user docs. The current (Oracle branded) version of VirtualBox
doesn't require this, so upgrade if possible.

I beg to differ - I just had to do exactly that running a win XP guest on the latest version of virtualbox. I just went through this myself and found the answer through google. You need to add your user to the vboxusers group (remember to log out and back in again for the change to take effect), then modify the usbfs line in /etc/fstab as follows: usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto,devgid=1000,devmode=664 0 0 The devgid parameter needs to be the same group id as the vboxusers group. This fixed it for me with a Win XP guest - it now works as expected. USB devices are available to the guest os when checked in the Devices->USB menu (after adding the appropriate devices filters) and to the host os when unchecked. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, OszkoA Thanks for all of you for the help. Now VirtualBox 3.2.6 (PUEL version, of course) works fine with USB support. The clue was to tweak /etc/fstab. The host is OS 11.2 the guest is Win 7 Enterprise.

Eddie I added the following line to /etc/fstab:
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=1000,devmode=664 0 0 Here devgid=1000 may change depending on the group ID of vboxuser group. After that I ran a "mount-a" command and that's all (for now, at least) OszkoA

I also have that line it /etc/fstab, but it was not sufficient to make USB work
