In fact I found ZAMZAR late last night. Tried it. Here are the results:
* Content was converted (opened in OO as an RTF file).
* plain fonts - no fancy fonts are carried over.
* art work is basically a black blob
At least it is a starting point...

Seriously, though I once liked that applicaiton, it is the most closed format around.
Even different versions can't open each other.
I'd suggest your sender resend as PDF or .doc, which can be export options.
Another option is to use the online conversion tools such as Zamzar http://www.zamzar.com/
