I don't have the money to buy another tape to verify it works, but am starting to wonder if this is a possible explanation. I have had this tape drive working before, but remember always seeing these errors here and there, but thought nothing. I have spent a several hours searching for information regarding this error, but can't find anything relevant to this specific problem. A comment in 'linux/drivers/block/ide-tape.c' near the source of this error suggests that the retrying of a packet command will "abort" if there is a problem with the devices DMA.
