[opensuse] HowTo Install New 2.6.23.1-900.ccj58-default kernel and SAVE my present one too
Listmates, Jan: How can I install the new 2.6.23.1-900.ccj58-default kernel with Yast and tell Yast to leave my old kernel there, and Don't delete it this time? I know I can do it. On 10.0 I had 11 kernels and sources on the same box to the last working one if needed, etc.: drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2005-12-07 20:21 linux-2.6.13-15 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2006-07-28 17:24 linux-2.6.13-15.10 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2006-09-17 10:29 linux-2.6.13-15.11 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2006-12-27 19:01 linux-2.6.13-15.12 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2007-03-10 14:20 linux-2.6.13-15.13 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2007-06-23 13:46 linux-2.6.13-15.15 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2007-10-15 16:51 linux-2.6.13-15.16 drwxr-xr-x 19 752 2007-10-15 16:51 linux-2.6.13-15.18 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2007-10-02 17:58 linux-2.6.13-15.18-obj drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2006-02-10 17:55 linux-2.6.13-15.7 drwxr-xr-x 3 72 2006-05-26 17:05 linux-2.6.13-15.8 But so far in 10.3 every time I install a new kernel and source, Yast or zypper or whatever the clever package, keeps removing the original kernel. None of the automatic installation tools (Yast-zypper-smart) seem to leave the old kernel & source intact. I have had some success by manually installing using rpm -i kernel.xxxxx. It would be prudent to back up source, lib and boot directories just in case. Never let updater or Yast do the updating for you is a good rule of thumb even if you normally don't care. If it installs a 'bad' for your system, you have no recovery. So, always download kernels, sources and patches and do it manually ensuring it (Yast) won't touch your boot options. I wish they had never changed that!!! At least it should have left the previous one until the new one had proven itself before wiping it from the face of the earth. Rarely is space such an issue that we can't afford to hang on to an old kernel for a few days or weeks. I get many megabytes of Yast2 logs documenting each days updates....I'd rather keep the old kernel instead if space is that much of an issue! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

smart does
smart flag --show multi-version java kernel-default kernel-source
I guess I manage to get it AFU somehow :) I usually use the GUI version but I guess the CLI version offers more flexibility? At least with the RPM -i, I have managed to keep old versions intact. I am inundated by all of the documentation. It is impossible to keep up with it all, literally. I think it is about time for a new book: "SuSE 10.3 for Dummies" that condenses all of the recent 'gotchas' into one place along with their solutions. :) Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
