Hi, I am on a default install of SuSE 9.3 Pro. I would like to use the java compiler, specifically the command 'javac' to compile some *.java programs. Is the required software present in the 9.3 Pro edition? If not available, will installing JDK 1.5.0 (J2SE 5.0) serve my purpose with out screwing the existing setup? Regards, Chaitanya. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

If not available, will installing JDK 1.5.0 (J2SE 5.0) serve my purpose with out screwing the existing setup? If it is not on the CDs or DVD, then certainly Sun Java 1.5.0 is on the SuSE ftp mirrors, complete. In Yast software installation, filter Package Groups/Development/Languages/Java. SuSE screwed up the package descriptions (they are all the description for the JRE). The 1.4.2
Chaitanya Krishna A wrote: package descriptions are correct. The full SDK seems to include the devel package (java-<version>-sun-devel) plus the JRE. When I installed SuSE 9.3, the 1.4.2 JRE and plugin were selected automatically, and you possibly have them installed also. You can just delete those and install the 1.5.0 packages, as there seems to be only one package (a network backup system) that requires 1.4.2, and nothing depends on it. If you do happen to be using this package, YaST will complain when you try to remove the 1.4.2 JRE :-) . Then you should simply have to modify its operating environment to point to the 1.4.2 JRE; the rest of your system can use 1.5.0 without problem. I believe Sun has instructions somewhere how to accomplish this. (Altnernatively, the src.rpm is on the ftp mirrors, and it may be possible to recompile it for Java 1.5.0).

Yes. You have a choice of Java 2 1.4 or Java 2 5.0 (aka 1.5.0). You can install both and use update-alternatives (man update-alternatives) to switch between them. In any case javac should be available as /usr/bin/javac and /usr/bin is normally on the PATH. -- JDL
