Formatting smart card
Hi gang, Well, I figured out how to get my card reader to work, now the thing is to figure out how to format the card. It's a 128MB smart card, and when I try to format it to FAT16 in YaST partitioner, it always comes up FAT32. I've messed with the options and it still makes it FAT32. Is there another way? Man fdisk left me as confused as I'd be if it had been written in Chinese, heh. Thanks, John

fdisk /dev/sda Command (m for help): m Command action a toggle a bootable flag b edit bsd disklabel c toggle the dos compatibility flag d delete a partition l list known partition types #### m print this menu n add a new partition o create a new empty DOS partition table p print the partition table ##### q quit without saving changes s create a new empty Sun disklabel t change a partition's system id ##### u change display/entry units v verify the partition table w write table to disk and exit ##### x extra functionality (experts only "l" 6 FAT16 "d" "n" and select primary partition 1. "t" and select "6" for FAT16 "w". However the manpage is written, the command itself is quite intuitive. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Hi Sid, Thanks, but that stuff just isn't intuitive to 'me'. Works the same way with calculus...some people 'get it', most don't. I didn't, even after 3 semesters of trying. Anyway, I tried some of the commands above, but kept getting 'invalid option' type returns. John

Hmmmmmmmmm.... I don't find it too different to fdisk on DOS, when I changed to Minix and later Linux, I had no trouble from the start. I could delete all the partitions, setup new ones and create filesystems on them. "mkfs.vfat -F 16 /dev/sda1" would setup FAT16. I suppose the man pages contain lots of options for those who feel the need for them, but I like to keep it simple. You have a disk, you want to "print" the partition table to see what's on it, you decide you want to "delete" what's there, then you "add a new partition", "print" to see how it looks, "change" it's partition id to whatever you want, "write and exit", mkfs and you are done. You can experiment until you are happy, type "m" and check the command options as you go. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Okay, I'll mess with the 'm' command as I go along. Thanks for your patience Sid. John
Duse any one have a suggestions for a AMD 64 bit laptop? I am thinking about getting a 64 bit laptop but want any one opinion that has one? How long will one last on a battery? Thanks David
I recently got the hp zv5000 and love it. I haven't run the battery down all the way yet, i upgraded to the 12 cell and bought an extra one. I have done a network copy that took over 3 hours and the batter still showed over 1/4. B-) On Thursday 25 November 2004 10:28 pm, David A Sexton wrote:
