I downloaded an *.exe file and, after changing to "su", moved it to a Windows directory (FAT32). I then tried to change the file's ownership from root to me. I got the message "Changing ownership of "X.exe" Operation not permitted. -- Best regards, Dennis J. Tuchler 7330 Kingsbury Boulevard University City, Missouri 63130

fat32 doesn't have a field for "owner" so that's never going to work. -- Certified: Yes. Certifiable: of course! jabber ID: anders@rydsbo.net

Hi, Dennis: I don't think Win FAT32 respects file ownership. If I remember correctly, all files in a FAT32 partition look executable to Linux. Regards, -- שׁלום Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

But, I could change the ownership of a text file. Windows file systems, NT or FAT, do not contain the permission bits and ownership flags you find in native Unix and Linux file systems, and hence you cannot change the permissions with chmod. I bet when you check the ownership, the owner for ALL the files changed, not just the one for that text file. The problem is that the data does not exist for those 2 file systems. -- Jerry Feldman

Hi, Dennis: I think it would be good to know how you are accessing this Win partition. It coud be: 1. Dual boot. 2. Win4Lin (Essentially a Linux filesystem) 3. VMWare 4. A windows box through samba. I can try 2 - 4. Not 1. So let me know if I can validate your question. Best regards. -- שׁלום Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

FAT partitions don't support owners or groups. You mount them according to the owner you want to use.
