Well, the patch files from a kernel mirror (e.g., linux/kernel/v2.4) are for patching the kernel source tree on your hard drive to the version specified in the main file. For example, I have linux-2.4.16.tar.bz2 and patch-2.4.17.bz2 on my hard drive. Are you familiar with pipes? The patch (pure text) is piped to the patch utility, put it has to decompress it first. 'bzip2 - dc' decompresses to standard output, allowing patch to "catch it". Unless the current directory was the source tree for Linux 2.4.16, the patch probably failed, as it had nothing to patch. -- Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 3A1446A0

If you want to know what kernel your running..at a console or in an xterm you can type this.. uname -a And this will give you all the info you want. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "I've never been quarantined.
