[opensuse] contrib vs. Packman
I have not yet used contrib: http://en.opensuse.org/Contrib It seems to be gaining packages. (autossh is one I requested via bugzilla be added to OS 11.2 and it got put in Contrib instead.) And I've never really understood what Packman is. It obviously holds a lot more than problematic codecs, etc. Can someone explain how they will work together? Can someone explain how they will work together? This is a difficult Question. A Few of the openSUSE/Novell Team Members are packaging in Packman. But i think so: Contrib as Member of the Build Service is near by OpenSUSE/Novell. OpenSUSE Build Service as whole System is a Community Project, but it is near by Novell/openSUSE than Packman. But Packman has high Quality Packages, as Contrib, too...

So Team Members that are currently packaging non-license encumbered software for Packman will likely be moving their packages to Contrib over time? Does Packman get packages from non-Team Members somehow? Or does it mean that Packman will slowly shrink in number of packages it contains until all that is left is the License Encumbered packages? Some of the OpenSUSE Members packing for Packman, too. But i thin the big different are the Licenses. Build Service only can host Projects with an free Licence (similar to GPL/LGPL). Packman hosts many Projects with other Licences: w32codecs, libxine1.

The Packman's have no plans on merging with Contrib. Mainly because Packman is following a complete different set of rules. For instance you can do version updates of Software in Packman, you cant in Contrib. etc. etc. Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. Contrib is a community-driven logical extension of Factory, with all limits applied. (i.e. no codecs, no patented stuff, etc...) Its is like Ubuntu Universe Pacman has no such limitations. Packman started long before openSUSE existed as a means to offer packages for SuSE Linux that were not part of the distribution. Nowadays it's mostly interesting for all the stuff Novell can't put into the distribution or host in the build service due to license issues like various audio and video codecs. Yes. Its a complete 3rd party repository with its own set of maintainers, rules etc.

Please define work together. Nobody is really testing for compatibility or anything. Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
