[opensuse] Network Manager??? (WiFi problem)
My wireless "card" (really an Intel Centron wireless feature) was read and installed when I installed my 10.2, SO I tried to connect with a wireless router. Firefox reported that it couldn't connect. So, as su, I entered ifup eth1, to which I received this reply: Network interface is managed from Network Manager Network Manager will be advised to set up eth1 but it cannot be assured from here. There is no "Network Manager" on the Yast2 menus. What is this all about? Is there a HowTo or some other material on this problem? -- Best regards, Dennis J. You should have an icon in your systray to control the NetworkManager. If you right click on it, you should see an option to connect to a wireless network, where you can enter things like essid and encryption keys (if needed) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What I found was that if I opened 'options' by right clicking on KNetworkManager I could select 'Switch to offline mode' and then 'Switch to online mode' and it would bring up the connection. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have no such icon. I have Kmenu/Internet/Network Tools(administration) icon and a Network Browsing icon on my desktop (in which there are several icons, none of which is Network Manager. How do I fix this? Ot, how do I disable KnetworkManager and just use ifup and ifdown? -- Best regards, Dennis J. AFAIK, it should be sufficient to start the YaST LAN module and answer the first question "use Network Manager or traditional method with ifup/ifdown" appropriate. -- David Mayr, http://davey.de openSUSE LINUX, http://opensuse.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well Its not always sufficient David, because on multiple occasions Knetworkmanager simply disappears, often leaving a gap in the tray icons where it used to be. (Which is a sure sign it has zombied and manual efforts are necessary). Side rant: Why s it that network manager must be exclusive, and can not share duties with ifup/down. ESPECIALLY when its not proven, and frequently un-reliable. I'm not aware of any other quasi-userland utility that disables system level tools. Its positively un-posix. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Not butting in...well a little. I could never get this thinkpad (r40) to work wireless in suse9.3. Yast in 10.2 found it, set it up, I added kinternet as a control interface, and voila! I'm able to email this from a motel in Silver City. Wahoooooo!

Shortly, during the installation you chose to use NetworkManager to manage all network interfaces instead of ifup. It's anyway possible to change this through YaST.
