I ran into a similiar problem yesterday.
In my case I was running 2.4.2-4GB kernel.
The fix: edit modules.conf and add aliases for the following in the secion that tests the kernel version...
The problem is the module names changed in the newer kernels... which provides more ppp support :-)
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias char-major-108 bsd_comp
alias ppp ppp_async
I'll paste part of the page I found the fixes on...
Perhaps suse should add this to the SDB as I could not find it there using a search for tty-ldisc

PPP
---
The PPP driver has been restructured to support multilink and to
enable it to operate over diverse media layers. If you use PPP,
upgrade pppd to at least 2.4.0b1.
If you are not using devfs, you must have the device file /dev/ppp
which can be made by:
mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0
as root.
If you build ppp support as modules, you will need the following in
your /etc/modules.conf file:
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
If you use devfsd and build ppp support as modules, you will need
the following in your /etc/devfsd.conf file:
LOOKUP PPP MODLOAD

This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check t suse@linux:~ > /sbin/modprobe -v ppp modprobe: Can't locate module ppp suse@linux:~ > exit

I have only been using linux for two months now and have worked long and hard on getting this thing to work with SuSE. Could anyone give me some advice on what I need to do now as I am unsure at this stage. Hey, it's similar to my problems. I'm running vanilla SuSE 7.1 2.4.0 kernel, but after installing Win4Lin 3.0 enabled kernel, the system reports lack of ppp module. What do you suggest is the best fix? Edit modules.conf or patching the SuSe kernel with Win4Lin 2.4.x patch, or should I do both? Sincerely, Sasa
