firefox interface fonts & gnome-control-center
I am looking for help eliminating an annoying interaction between firefox and the gnome control center. I startx, using openbox, and invoke firefox. The interface fonts (menu, etc) are huge. I invoke gnome-control-center, click "fonts", and immediately the firefox (and gnome-control-center) fonts all shrink to right size. I exit gnome-control-center only to find it has redefined my keys so I have to rerun xmodmap. This is all just annoying, and I would like to understand enough to get rid of it. I tried to purge my system of all things gnome but core SuSE utilities need enough gnome and gtk libraries that I couldn't do it. Thanks, Henry Harpending

You need to start /opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-settings-daemon when you start X. This will make Firefox's fonts and the rest display correctly. You're not realizing that Gnome 2's control center is starting this daemon and it continues to run after the control center is closed. So just start this prog at the start of X and you'll be fine. It doesn't take lots of resources for it to be running and you'll be much happier. :) Cheers! - Ben -- "There is no need to teach that stars can fall out of the sky and land on a flat Earth in order to defend religious faith."

Bingo! This did it. But it is on my 9.1 gnome 2.8 installation at /opt/gnome/lib/control-center-2.0/gnome-settings-daemon Thanks, Henry

Glad it worked. What I pasted was from my SuSE 8.2 box which I use mainly as a server these days.. since I purchsed the Powerbook I don't log into the Linux box much as a desktop. Cheers!
