Now that I have 7.1 and this DVD?
I looked on the hcdb and saw nothing regarding DVD players. SuSE must have some belief that DVD players/devices are supported. What should I buy? I remember someone saying there is a difference between DVD data and DVD video. I'm still not clear if that distinction is a hard ware issue. I'd like to buy a DVD that is compatable with SuSE Linux 7.1, and not spend too much on it. Any suggestions? TIA, Steve

Most DVD drives should do just fine, since we simply use them as large CD-ROM drives. Remember, this is not about playing movies :) LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany Tell no big lies today. LenZ Lenz,
Did you see the stuff I posted a few days ago? http://lurch.ucd.ie/~conormc/linux/dvd.html I have no idea what others may be doing with DVD movies and Linux. I haven't seen a Holywood production in half a year. I haven't seen a TV this year other than when briefly passing by the AV section of a department store. I don't even know if all DVD devices will play a movie on that other OS. I did pick up a Toshiba DVD devices for $99. (Thanks Dee.) It works great. SuSE 7.1 installed much more efficiently than it would have using traditional CR-ROMs. Steve
Hi. I have Suse 7.0 on a laptop, upgraded to kernel 2.4.2. I've been trying APM and ACPI on kernel (one or the other), but none of them work completely. The laptop also boots in W98SE, where it has no problems and no locks. APM: -Mostly works, but there are frequent keyboard and mouse locks (I can only recover without power down if the laptop is on a network, with 'telnet' and 'apm -s' from other PC). Tried a lot of APM variation in kernel, but none seem to give a lock free laptop. Lock happens while in a text console, but never within X, and happens also with keyboard activity. -The APM options in '/etc/rc.config' are clear. -'cat /proc/apm' shows a couple of negative numbers, such as battery charge unknown. -With 'shutdown', power goes off completely, including the power supply. -The laptop can be suspended from the keyboard. -I had a Redhat type distribution before on this laptop. Perhaps there were also keyboard&mouse locks, but as last resort they were solved pressing momentarily the power off button; that doesn't work now. ACPI: -No locks. The screen goes black if left, but recovers. -At 'shutdown', power supply does not turn off. -There are no ACPI options similar to APM ones in '/etc/rc.config'. -At boot appear following ACPI related messages ('dmesg'): BIOS-e820: 000000000000fc00 @ 0000000003ff0000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 0000000000000400 @ 0000000003fffc00 (ACPI NVS) ACPI: Core Subsystem version [20010208] ACPI: Subsystem enabled ACPI: plvl2lat=200 plvl3lat=2000 ACPI: C2 enter=-1 C2 exit=-1 ACPI: C3 enter=-1 C3 exit=-1 ACPI: Using ACPI idle ACPI: If experiencing system slowness, try adding "acpi=no-idle" to cmdline ACPI: System firmware supports: S0 S3 S4 S5 ACPI: found EC @ (0x62,0x66,GPE 4 GL 4) acpi_get_battery_info failed Makes sense, and again battery charge is unknown. -The laptop cannot be suspended from the keyboard. -With 'ps ax' a process 'kacpi' appears (process 9). I don't know if running 'acpid' daemon has any use, but certainly it does not solve the shutdown problem. -ACPI utilities in http://phobos.fs.tum.de/acpi interpret ACPI data, but this is difficult to understand. -Booting in W98SE after Linux in ACPI shows problems with A20 with a worm boot: turning off completely is necessary before booting into W98SE (the laptop has no "reset" button). It seems that APM provides more features, but keyboard&mouse locks are not acceptable. Also, W98SE doesn't either "know" battery charge, but as battery goes lower the warning beeps are the same in W98SE and Linux (with APM or ACPI). Main questions: APM: -Has anybody had those keyboard&mouse locks, even with keyboard activity, and knows how to get rid of them, or a workaroung when locking? ACPI: -How can the power supply be turned off? -Any idea about the A20 problem? Any other suggestion?

Read a good article yesterday on how to play DVD's using Xine. Explains what is needed and links to files. I'm considerating buying one so the article caught my attention. http://www.linux.com/multimedia/newsitem.phtml?sid=1&aid=11799 John...........
