And that was very impressive multi-meter usage! Above and beyond the call for the IDE cable but right on for the power supply. Have you tried another 80-pin IDE cable to see what happens?

I have the old flat ones that I replaced (probably unnecessarily) for airflow and geek points. I'll try swapping tonight.

Verner Kjærsgaard has been seeing a very similar problem too. Have you tried his workaround of removing the DVD, putting in a CD and then removing that and putting the DVD back in?

That's also for tonight, when I get a chance to spend a couple of undisturbed hours at the offending box. I hope it works, but it still wouldn't explain why the silly problem happens. YaST losing the ability to see the drive (and contents) as installation source is the only symptom.

What is the Make/Model of your DVD drives?

I'll have to check when I get home... but there's only the one DVD-RW drive in the machine. My wife's PC has the identical drive and doesn't show the problem (her box is still at 10.0).

What about the Master/Slave jumpers and physical position on the IDE cable of your IDE devices? What devices are hooked up where; hda=?, hdb=?, hdc=?, hdd=?, etc. Are they set as Master/Slave or are they set as Cable Select? Master always at the end of the cable, Slave in the middle no matter if you use Master/Salve or Cable Select?

My hard disks are on one IDE cable, hda and hdb (master and slave). The DVD drive is alone on the second IDE cable, jumpered as master. I haven't used Cable Select since about 1988. :-)

I've dealt with systems where Cable Select was the only reliable way to use IDE devices. I've dealt with systems that would _not_ do Cable Select. And getting the Master to the end of the cable, Slave in the middle and controller at the other end is very important.

I don't know that I've ever had it the other way 'round, but that's just coincidence, not because I thought there was reason to keep a certain order when using Master/Slave configuration. What would be the importance? Shouldn't physical order make a difference only when using Cable Select?

Firmware updates? System BIOS and DVD drive? www.CDFreaks.com is good for info about CD or DVD drives and firmware issues.
