This is my final stab at getting an answer. I've asked the question before more than once, and I've tried everything I can think of, but no matter what I do, at some point, my display will freeze unrecoverably, either in the screensaver, the blanked screen, or while I am just doing something in Adobe Acrobat or Mozilla with the mouse. I have an nVidia video card and I have tried it with and without the nVidia drivers, using ust the nv driver, with 3D on and off, with greater and lesser color depths (which used to work in my last distro), changing the resolutions, etc., but at some point the screen will still freeze requiring a hard reboot. Not a problem with the card, because it works fine in Windows 2000 Server, and I could adjust things, as I said, in Libranet or Mandrake so it didn't happen, by reducing the color depth to 16,000 colors, which was adequate for my purposes. But can't seem to get Suse to work with my card, or I don't know the magic words. It is a Geforce2 MX400. The rest of the system is a Celeron 2.4, 512 MB RAM, 60g HD, CDRW, CDR, Proxim wireless PCI card. O/W I will just use W2000 Server, which works and doesn't freeze or break, even though it is Bill. I've had occasional freezes with a MX400 on a Mandrake 9.2 box and another MX400 that would freeze frequently on a SuSE 9.0 box, I changed both for FX5200's and they have been OK since, I built another box with the MX400 and Mandrake 10.0-beta and never had a problem. One thing you can try as boot options to see if they have any effect. I suspect that the MX400 is not that well supported. acpi=off pci=noacpi Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Someone suggested that the hardware should be in the subject line for
better responses. There it is.

Why? It seemed pretty obvious to me that you had either a software or hardware problem. Regards Sid.

Does seem rather certain that it would be *either* a software or hardware problem. Profound. Probably was necessare to quote *all* of the preceeding posts including the signatures. ouch! Patrick, I thought we were trying to get them to quit quoting everything... unless you are being depresingly sarcastic in which case... I shall /dcc you some Jolt gum to improve your mood ... :) -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit it's just an afterthought; okay ? : Test-tube babies shouldn't throw stones.
Well, the only useful suggestion I got was from the person who suggested I also include the hardware inthe subject line. The rest of the posts have been about how the post is quoted/posted, etc., which suggests there aren't too many suggestions about the problem itself. Haven't been in the past, either. Thanks, anyway, Don J. --- jfweber@bellsouth.net wrote:

No "probably" about it- it was. I hadn't seen the original message so Sid's quoting (correctly) of the message in his response gave me the chance to read what the problem that Don is having.

I guess then, just to make sure that *you* have the opportunity to read the entire thread, that from this moment on everyone should be compelled to full quote and top post, as the mentioned post was reversed to normal conversation. ps.
