RE: [SLE] Network problem - please help
here is some files (I have to write it by hand, bec. there is no floppy drive attached to the ws, and no network - no route to print. I've just installed Suse Linux 6.3. I am a lamer to linux, but I try to tell you what is the problem. My SMC 9432 BTX 10/100 PCI network card was found by the system (can be seen when linux is booting). If I try ifconfig, the card looks like working, it's IP address (logical) 10.1.1.20, the read hardware address is O.K. (not FF:FF:FF.... or 00:00:00...). It is installed as epic100, eth0. If I try to telnet my system from it's console, it's ok. If I open the console window, and ping myself, it's ok. But from any other part of the network the system cannot be seen (even ping is not working), no telnet or ftp connection. The led of my HUB is green (means 100 mbs connection is o.k.) so the system is wired to the network. I used suse 5.0 (i hope this was it's version as far as I know) before, it worked fine with my card. What is the problem? Hi Kállai, Is it this your card the "EtherPower II 9432 10/100" as known to SuSE CDB??, if it does, as is evident then it is really supported, can see: "SuSE/CDB Results of your query" at: http://cdb.suse.de/cgi-bin/scdb?ID=96600628535&HTML=ENGLISH%2Fcdb_listtemplates%2Fshow_a.htm&INDEX=4175 or in the URL appears wrapped as maybe would, then you could try: "SuSE/CDB Main menu" at: http://cdb.suse.de/cgi-bin/scdb?HTML=ENGLISH/cdb_listtemplates/menu.htm&LANG=ENGLISH checking [Network adapter] and [Manufacturer] = "SMC", this will lead you the CDB's on SMC list, and you can see card ref on first position, click it. So it is supported, and then what the heck?? Seems to me that what i will do next is to swap net cables between machines, assuring that it is not a cable glitch. Sometimes green led on HUB appears red but cable is partly wrong, i do not know if this is your case. Or maybe a card problem, they are not unusual. Must also test card with it's original driver dskts, if you got them. This is the first thing that i always do. May well be that you need some form of _windoze_ to test it. ---- Kállai Gábor wrote:

Your info appears good looking, thought.
Thank you for any idea:
Wellcome!! =:`)
It is installed as epic100, eth0.
This another thing (epiq100) could be the source of problems, i do not know for sure.

Use their cables to swap, and look at the HUB leds trying to see blinking. Try a continous ping [aka, ping -t] to give you some time to manipulate cables in between, and obtain some led blinking. If you got blinks on first try but no network results, then switch to OS/software digging. -- HTH Best regards, Eduardo Carriles [-- Better a smile than a flame --] (Long time SuSE-Linux [preferred distro] user).
