RE: [SLE] apt advice
===== Original Message From rnr@sanctum.com ===== Hello SuSE folk
Been running SuSE since 6.4, 7.0, 7.3, and now a clean new 8.0
I have never been able to make YOU work properly and I have decided to try out apt. Went and downloaded all of the files. I see a notice about not using rpm4 with SuSE which is the latest build of apt. I don't want to screw this up.
Can somebody out there tell me what you did to get a good working apt in 8.0 ?
Just continue what you started. The apt files you retrieved are version 0.3.19, which have proved to work reliable. BTW: the notice is _not_ "not using rpm4 with SuSE", but "SuSE is not using rpm4" -- Dit bericht is verzonden met Webmail van Freeler. Ook snel en betrouwbaar toegang tot internet? Richard, Thanks for your reply.....It is really nice to have the "main man" reply to you. Installed libapt-0.3.19, apt-0.3.19, netselect-0.2-1, and perl-XML-simple. Following the how-to but stopped because I have a question. Synaptic would not install.(dependencies) Also must do a /sbin/SuSEconfig now and then after every upgrade, right?

ummm. Not sure I understand. Makes me nervous. Isn't that the same result?? I went through hell with RH when they upgraded 3 to 4. One of the main reasons I use Suse exclusively now. Thought that I read on this list that you had to patch SuSE to make a version 4 of RPM work in SuSE. Does that mean I need/can install the Apt4rpm-0.50-1 ?? Your help and interest is very appreciated. Bob S.

It is adviced to execute /sbin/SuSEconfig indeed after every update.

A good moment to switch to another rpm version is with a new release (to my opinion). Well actually a x.0 release, but SuSE just passed this milestone with 8.0. Perhaps to sync with UnitedLinux partners Conectiva and Turbolinux, SuSE could make the switch when the UnitedLinux version is released...
read on this list that you had to patch SuSE to make a version 4 of RPM
I applied a patch to the APT source code to get it compiled. Still wundering how much runtime impact this has.

There no problems at all installing this version of apt at SuSE. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

please read: I applied a patch to the APT 0.5.4 source code. There is no impact on the 0.3.19 version -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
