[opensuse] Application Fonts in KDE
I am expereincing some difficulty setting up fonts for an application I am running. I apologise if this is long-winded, or if I use basic terminology. I have IDL, a data manipulation and visualisation package, installed under SuSE 10.2. There are some fonts that I can define within the program for windows and displays, and there are others that are taken from my login settings. This allows the programmer to control the fonts within IDL environment. The problem however is, that when I use the IDL file browser the text is very small, and not legible. I have contacted IDL tech support who responded saying that the file browser picks up its font from my settings. They suggest using an .Xdefaults file, but I do not have a .Xdefaults file in my home directory. I have tried changing the fonts through 'Configure Desktop', but that had no effect. Does anyone know where else I can change or modify fonts to get around this problem I am having. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Configure Desktop only affects the KDE font settings. IDL is apparently using the much older (and less user friendly) X resources system to obtain its font settings so it won't help. Follow the tech support's advice and create an .Xdefaults file. I haven't used X resources for ages so I won't give any detailed advice but the first google hit for Xdefaults is "Using the .Xdefaults file" - https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECN/Support/KnowledgeBase/Docs/20020202104217 . You may want to find out the name of the X resource that IDL reads its font from - it might be "idl*Font", reading the page above, but that's just a guess.
