Installation is a *pain*. Setting up swap space during installation is an obtuse process! Not for the unwary. After installation, no problem.

I would definite need 16MB because I'm using cable modem that would pass 10Mbps around my home network once built, so I would need at least 16MB.

Well, I too have a 10Mbps network and it presents no problem.

That's a comfortable fit. At the moment, the 8M box is only using 1.4MB of swap. There are probably still a few daemons I could exorcise to reduce core requirements.

If the firewall would serve as firewall, then why not just go for a monolithic kernel where there's no modules? Then you don't have to worry about modules. Besides, your modem driver will be loaded as modules so frequently (if you're net addict that is) then why not build them directly to kernel?

The network card! I have old cards lying around and some are unstable; so I'd rather allow that to be a module because I don't want to rebuild a kernel and then wonder how to transfer it to a machine without a working network card! The firewall doesn't even have a CD-ROM. It's loaded as NFS client. PPP and most other necessary stuff is linked into the kernel. What "modem driver" would you suggest? I'm OK on the serial port thanks, minimal as possible. No mouse, no fancy graphics, no sound except the "bleep". Not even parallel drivers. Well, that's in the stripped kernel; the stock one is still running and it leaves almost enough space as you can see. If my dumb terminal worked without fizzing and popping, I'd 'decapitate' the firewall and run a serial console without graphics card and keyboard.
