[opensuse] KDE 4.2 messed up my panel
After updating to the latest KDE version from factory, my panel doubled its size vertically, see picture: http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/593/snapshot1g.png I tried "Panel Options"->"Panel Settings", but the height adjustment thing makes the panel roll over to the top of the screen, which is ridiculous. How do I restore the size to what it's supposed to be? /Jan K. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The one that's default when installing KDE on openSUSE 11.1, 4.1 I think. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Looks like you're up against the standard config file issue... when updating from the default install to the latest KDE4 from factory, the config files are incompatible - a LOT changed between the default KDE4 and factory. The "simple" fix is to log out of KDE4, and from a terminal, go in and delete: ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc and then log back into KDE4. Removing these two files will force KDE4 back to the default first run config, and you can/should be able to set up your desktop the way you like it again. SOME full-screen games will also do the same thing...."destroy" your desktop! Plasma ISN'T that stable yet. Which games? If this is reproducible I would like to report it. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I haven't seen a single case of this happening in KDE4.2. I Beta test games for LGP and none of the games in Beta (all of which I play in full screen) cause any issues with Plasma. The same goes for a rather long list of games tested/played in Cedega and Wine. I have tried several other (Linux native) games and all worked fine in KDE4.2. Plasma in 4.2.whatever the latest build is in Factory is _very_ solid. All the wobbliness of the early 4.0 and 4.1 releases is gone, and Plasma is working fine - conditional on you removing the plasmarc files after updating from 4.0 or 4.1 to 4.2. if you are trying to use 4.2 with old config files, then you're just asking for trouble. I notice that all the Wine games in your Desktop folder lack icons. Does whatever installer put them there not create Icon= entries in the .desktop files in ~/Desktop that KDE can see? I'm interested to know where the corresponding icon files actually are. Will -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

KDE 4.2 should not be used with the 4.1 config files. I agree that this is ok for OBS cutting edge users but we have a responsibility in the medium term to find out where config migration is not working so the 11.1-> 11.2 upgrade is a pleasant experience. In this case I'm not sure that it's a config issue, but I'd like to check the content of one of the the .desktop files in $HOME/Desktop. That is true, and Suse will have to take care of that as KDE is not. KDE has stated that 4.0 and 4.1 were not meant for end users and now it's biting Suse in the butt for releasing that release anyway.

If you discover a path to easy migration, then please post it to the wiki.
