[opensuse] KDE4 konsole strange fonts and long startup time
Hello: I tried again KDE4. Installed KDE 4.5 factory on openSUSE 11.2. No to mention the general things I usually complain about I found something very strange: In konsole I set the font to Misc Console; in KDE4 konsole this font looks very strange and it is almost unreadable. It looks correct though in KDE3 konsole even in KDE4 session. Furthermore the startup time of KDE3 konsole is 2 seconds while the startup time of KDE4 konsole is 9 seconds (both in KDE 4 session). I find this startup time extremely long, especially compared to KDE3 konsole startup. How to fix these issues? Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sadly, this is a fairly well known issue: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217700 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591580 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=229400 Apparently somewhere along the way Konsole and/or Qt lost the abillity to deal with fonts whose names contain spaces such as "Misc Console". Strangely enough, if you edit the appearance settings of your konsole profile, and open the font dialog, you'll see a "Console" (or "Console [Misc]") font in addition to "Misc Console". You've got "Misc Console" selected and it makes Konsole slow as hell. And looks weird. Select "Console" (or "Console [Misc]") instead. This solved the problem for me. Courier New works here and is set in KDE's systemsettings for fixed font as well. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know this is an old thread but can anyone say the problem with the Misc Console font has been fixed for 11.3? Regards Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know this is an old thread but can anyone say the problem with the Misc Console font has been fixed for 11.3?
If you have an NVidia graphics card, this is fixed in driver version 195.36.15, see http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_195.36.15.html Specifically ChangeLog mentions:
Fixed a performance regression with non-antialiased text in KDE4.
I am guessing your konsole font is not antialiased either. Regards, ismail -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, I am using nvidias 260.19.12 driver. My fonts are anti-aliased. I'm not having a performance problem, that I know of. It just the Misc Console font is not rendering properly. The best way to get attention to those bugs is opening a thread at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 and/or reporting the bug directly to linux-bugs@nvidia.com . Hope that helps. Why do you think it's an NVIDIA problem? Same machine, same NVIDIA driver, using 11.2 renders fine. Regards Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well kind of intuition, for last decade all of the font related problem I had experienced had it roots back in the nvidia driver :) But still this is just a guess.
