What happened to the 'compose' keyboard feature?
I need to be able to type the following without major obsticles. I spent dozens of hours getting this working in the past. It is no longer working. Can someone tell me how to get the compose keyboar back under 8.2? Þar stendr salr einn fagr undir askinum við brunninn, ok ór þeim sal koma þrjár meyjar, þær er svá heita: Urðr, Verðandi, Skuld. Þessar meyjar skapa mönnum aldr. Þær köllum vér nornir. Enn eru fleiri nornir, þær er koma til hvers barns, er borit er, at skapa aldr, ok eru þessar goðkunnigar, en aðrar álfa ættar, en inar þriðju dverga ættar, svá sem hér segir: Sundrbornar mjök segi ek at nornir vera, eigu-t þær ætt saman; sumar eru áskunngar, sumar eru álfkunngar, sumar dætr Dvalins." I think you need to specify which type of keyboard you're using. With the International PC-105 keyboard, it's pretty easy. ð = alt-gr + d þ = alt-gr + t ó = ' (dead key) + o á = ' (dead key) + a æ = alt-gr + ä on a swedish keyboard, a separate key on a danish

Unfortunately that isn't working for me. There used to be 'compose' options with the keyboad types, or something along those lines. They seem to have vanished. This is truly frustrating.

Indeed. I usually try to avoid terms such as 'Viking'. It's easier to explain, but carries too many bad connotations, and really isn't representative of most of the people from that region and period. Archaeology is beginning to show these people were, ingeneral, far more peaceful than the accounts, and sensationalism would have us believe. OTOH, when my keyboard starts acting like this... The Compose key works fine under 8.2 here. There are the usual explanations and examples in ~/.Xmodmap. The only difference with previous versions of SuSE is that nothing has been uncommented in ~/.Xmodmap beforehand. The best way to set the Compose key is by specifying the key code. I chose the 'Pause' key as the Compose key. With the xev command I find that it's key code is 110. So in ~/.Xmodmap I have entered: keycode 110 = Multi_key Examples: ð = Compose key followed by -d or d- þ = Compose key followed by th Now how to find the key pairs for a certain character? My character encoding is ISO 8859-15. In man iso-8859-15 I find that the octal code for ð is 360. In /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-15/Compose I find that the keys for \360 are d and -. S.H. BTW: Just celebrating the fact that after my use of Linux rose from 50% to 99% in three and a half years, the switch is now complete. Whoopee! Well maybe I should note that I'm not a gamer, and there are no kids around...

I don't have a ~/.Xmodemap. I guess I can try and create one, but that is something I have always wanted to avoid because it always breaks something that I'm unaware of. Then I spend days trying to hunt down the source of the problem when I discover it a month later. I just recreated my home directory and let the setup create everything for me. Perhaps I'll be able to get it working now that all the old clutter is out of the way.

I pretty much remain exclusively booted into Linux. But there are times when things work better under XP. That's life. Steven

Well you can name the file anything you want. Create the file anythingyouwant containing something like this: keycode 110 = Multi_key replacing 110 with the key code of the key you wish to use as the Compose key, which you can find with the xev command. Then issue the command xmodmap anythingyouwant and the Compose key should be working. If it does then have it executed automatically when starting X. (By putting it in ~/.xinitrc?) BTW, ~/.Xmodmap was present after installation. It's somewhat strange that you're missing it. SH

Steven, I noticed that under 8.2 for me, the compose keys changed around again also. Don't remember if I just kept trying key combos or ran across it in one of the files that specify that, but turns out a right shift + right windows key gives me the option for those special letters.
