Re: [SLE] SUSE Linux 10.0 Final
Could anyone explain me the difference between the CD retail and the DVD eval iso's?? Thank you!
You can grab the DVD torrent file here:

Try for now: http://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/10.0/iso/SUSE-10.0-CD-i386-GM.torrent
I've fixed it also,
Andreas
Are there any mirrors for the torrent file itself? I can not even get the torrent file from suse server. It stays on 1% almost 10 minutes now.

$59.95. ;-) Actually, with the retail package, you get manuals and some apps that might not be on the free download.
The DVDs contains all the CDs, that's the difference.
Thank you... Probably I badly posted my question... My question was: why DVD is named Eval and the CDs are named Retail? Where are they different? More, the following link suggests that they are heavily different: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/professional/diff_cd_dvd.html Bye, Ferdinando

Because we had no better name for them :-)
Where are they different?
Nowhere, exact same packages.

Andreas, note that the question was about "eval" DVD. As long as I know, "eval" dvd can't be installed on the hard drive (see my other post on the subject), it can be run directly from the dvd, it's a big difference. of course the running content is the same as the cd's, but only a subset for evident reason (it's simply not possible to install all the apps for compatibility reason) jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

Mmhh, wasn't that the Live DVD? I suppose Eval is different than Live... So, my last question: does "eval" involve any kind of licensing problem when installed on HD? Is Eval DVD just the same of Retail CD? Does Eval DVD "stop", just like a trial? Do I have full right to install it and use it for business purpose? Downloading Eval DVD is the same than downloading 5 CDs and use the script to build the DVD? If not, why this kind of name instead of Retail DVD?

Last question? Or last questions ;-)
does "eval" involve any kind of licensing problem when installed on HD?
No.
Is Eval DVD just the same of Retail CD?
Just
Does Eval DVD "stop", just like a trial?
No.
Do I have full right to install it and use it for business purpose?
Yes - but don't expect enterprise support.
Downloading Eval DVD is the same than downloading 5 CDs and use the script to build the DVD?
yes.
If not, why this kind of name instead of Retail DVD?
The DVD in the retail box is a biarch DVD9 of 8.5 GB - the Eval DVD is a DVD5 of 3.6 GB for a single arch - we had to name it differentely. Eval might not have been the best choice but it's one we used for some time already... if this is true, eval is a very bad name :-(, it's just a i386DVD? because live eval cd/dvd was a very intersting thing. If so, do you plan to do again a "live" eval?? thanks jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

My 0.02 cents: - SUSE-CD-i386.iso => Installation CDs - SUSE-DVD-i386.iso => Installation DVD - SUSE-DVD-biarch.iso => Double layer DVD - SUSE-DVD-Live.iso => Live distro - SUSE-DVD-x64.iso => DVD 64 bit version In general: SUSE-<media>-<arch>.iso In my opinion it it easier and you'll avoid tons of mails asking what to download for their architecture... Anyway, SUSE 10 is great, and that's the only important thing... Keep on the good work! Ferdinando

Yes. That's right. You also have a x86_64 version.

It's also already there. In the iso directory of your mirror, look for a file called SUSE-10.0-LiveDVD.iso.

so only a bad naming.

I like this for a naming scheme. Not confusing like eval, and it denotes the platform supported.

The SUSE Evals of the last two years could all be installed - and the Eval DVD is exactly the same content as the Retail CDs. Why give it any separate name at all? Do you give the CDs any name? No. Then why for the DVD only? If you want to differentiate it from the Live DVD then just call it the install DVD. Else for every release that carries the word Eval you will be receiving fifty questions like this - why is it eval, is it limited-functionality, is it limited-time, does it not install, etc etc etc. All of which are quite natural, too. So just removing the word Eval will do, or just replace it by Install. SS.

Are we all speaking of the "live eval" cd? the only "eval" cd/dvd I know? I have in hand the 9.2 liveavel dvd, it have 1.27Gb, obviously not the hole cd content. I was acustomed to use suse liveaval on distant learning process and could not continue with this one of course, when you boot this dvd there is no install option, you boot and have a full functionning suse from it. searching, I found an "install into directory" in yast. May be this allow to install the eval cd. If true it's great and should be enphasised somewhere. I was used to see "suse8000"... files in my root (windows) directory and don't see them now, but may be this is related with the enhancement of the ram quantity. however I don't find a way to save config (network config, fe) on a live system. anyway, if the 10.0 dvd is the same thing (but is it the same thing?), it's not the same as the 5 cd's (it's better in some aspects). please, we need to know :-) thanks jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

Well you do not know of the *other* "eval" DVD, which is the only eval DVD *I* know. It installs, no problem.

This time the "eval" DVD has the same content as the 5 CDs. The readme files under the iso directory of your favourite mirror will tell you this.
of course, when you boot this dvd there is no install option, you boot and have a full functionning suse from it.
That's the Live DVD. Not the so called "Eval" DVD.
anyway, if the 10.0 dvd is the same thing (but is it the same thing?), it's not the same as the 5 cd's (it's better in some aspects).
It's the same thing, it's the same thing. Read this: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/10.0/iso/README.txt if you don't believe me.
please, we need to know :-)

Exactly. The DVD on the download servers is everything on the 5 CDs. No more, no less. If you want the full 10.0 Pro distribution, you have to buy the box. Simple as that. -- Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting
