I use 11.0 with all updates so far on an Acer Aspire 5315, but can't get sound when I want to play an .avi file. Who can give a hint? Thanks in advance André den Oudsten -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Meanwhile I installed libxine1 and tried again, with no results. André -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The avi files are containers, so it has to be missing codec for that specific content. And how do I do that?
These are the packages with codecs that I have installed on my system: libavcodec52-0.5-0.pm.2 libxine1-codecs-1.1.15-44.pm.0 w32codec-all-20071007-0.pm.1 k3b-codecs-1.0.5-0.pm.7 They are all from packman. OK, but do you get system sounds? Like the KDE startup sound? Karl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

André,
Just to verify. Go into your personal settings - System Settings - Sound & Multimedia -System Notifications and make sure everything is set up there. Near the bottom is a way to "play a sound" make sure it works. If it does, then try your sound again. If it does not, run alsaconf in a terminal and follow the commands there. Try it. Report back. You have made sure that nothing is muted in Kmix, right? Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If it is not due to a missing codec, then moving the .xine folder in your home and logging out and back in might help in case your catalog.cache is not up- to-date. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hello André, Have you tried setting manually the correct sound device? For example in kaffeine: setting => xine engine parameters => audio and change "default" to "alsa" (and something similar in other programs as well). I just installed suse 11.1 to an older laptop and the whole system was obsessed in using OSS (i don't have a clue why) instead of ALSA. Cheers, Sampsa On Monday 17 August 2009 10:40:03 am Andre den Oudsten wrote:
