I have been experiencing the first system crash with Linux after some years, today. The problem has been the inability to read from a whole hard drive!! I know for sure that I could not read from /var. And I could not login as root! I could only login as a user and then su as root. What could be the problem? There is nothing in the logs (which were obviously in /var). Praise NB: My system is running now after a reboot!

How old is the HDD? It sounds more like the beginnings of hardware failure to me. You've probably thought of that, but I figured I'd remind you in case you didn't. Welcome to one of the most hard-to-find-the-bug situations. :-( I started with ramdomly read only files, then no readable, then hanged system (no login, no remote login) and finally Surprise-I'm-reebooting :-# I've changed disk (I'm using it now, it's ok), memory, re-install from zero and the problem was the motherboard. Tested with winx also hangs (most frequently).

Keep your machine cold-very-cold and do a *GREAT* backup. If you find something like SIGNAL 11 in your logs, your hardware is buggy or dying.
