[opensuse] Howto disable Gnome's untrusted application popup
I'm running opensuse 11.2 and have fired up Gnome which so far beats KDE4. It does have one annoying 'feature' and that is a popup that announces you have tried to start an Untrusted Application. Does anyone know how to defeat that rascal? Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

??? I use GNOME all day, every day, and I don't recall ever seeing an "Untrusted Application" dialog. Are you double-clicking on program files [on the desktop, in nautilus, etc...] that do not have execute permissions? Or are you executing applications off a file-system mounted with the "user" options? -- openSUSE w/GNOME http://www.opensuse.org/en/ Linux for human beings who need to get work done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

When I switched over to Gnome it came up with the several apps I had on the desktop, for example, wifi-radar. When I double click on that icon, a dialog comes up saying Untrusted Application Launcher, the app launcher has not been marked as trusted, and asks if I want to launch anyway or cancel. Clicking launch anyway, it goes ahead and runs.
Or are you executing applications off a file-system mounted with the "user" options?
Nope, they;re in /bin or /usr/sbin. This is a fairly standard installation with everything but home on one partition and home on it's separate partition. No real magic involved. I did a bunch of googling and found the same question but no answers. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I found the answer at http://www.algorithm- forge.com/techblog/2009/07/executable-application-launcher/ It's a new feature. It's supposed to keep the user from starting a bad app on the desktop. Looks like there's no more drag n drop to create a link on the desktop either. Now you copy the app to the desktop or create the application launcher at the desktop. Course the idea had a little merit but the solution is silly. Instead of clicking once on a potentially bad app, you now must do it twice. Seems to be more of a pissoff factor to me. I guess the assumption is the user is particularly stupid. More Linux Vista ???. If the app is owned by root, the desktop link, which is not a link now, execution bit is not checked. So you do the "Launch anyway". The solution is to become root and set the "link;s" permissions to executable and the annoyance goes away. So I guess the bottom line is what use to be a link to an executable, is now a copy of the executable on the desktop and is called an Application Launcher? I checked Patricks solution and mine was already set at easy. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The solution makes perfect sense. Just like the are-your-sure dialog when performing a delete operation.

You're assuming that on a given workstation a user can become root.

I double check my YaST. I have the "easy" setting selected, and I do *not* experience the issue you describe. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It only makes sense if once you say go ahead and it doesnt pop up again. At a minimum It needs to offer the option of the little check box to skip the dialog the next time you start the same app.

How many users cannot become root on their own machine? And under the new scheme, how do you become root just to change the permissions? If I open a file manager as super user and try to change the permissions, I'm not allowed to. Bad old Konqueror which allowed such a thing is gone and Dolphin cant even start kwrite as root.
So I guess the bottom line is what use to be a link to an executable, is now a copy of the executable on the desktop and is called an Application Launcher? I checked Patricks solution and mine was already set at easy.

Mine is still doing the same thing after doing all the finger magic. I tried setting and resetting the "easy" setting and nothing changes. I've booted several times and even ran Vista to no avail. I think we're going to have chicken tonite so I can have some chicken bones to hang above the computer. That use to be our last resort when I did this stuff for a living. Maybe it'll work here. I've been traveling and unable to get on the net so perhaps something has been fixed. Will try another update and see what happens. Unnecessary and inflammatory remark!

iirc, this *used* to be related to the local security settings and having permissions set to the secure profile but I cannot find that settings manager in the present yast :^(. .. Just found it .. YaST2 -> "Security and Users" -> "Local Security" -> "Use secure file permissions" -> "Configure" -> "File Permissions" You probably have this set to "Secure" or "Paranoid", change to "Easy" and I believe the notices will disappear. Please consider posting w/o the innuendo. It contributes nothing. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
