[SLE] 3dfx, SB Live & SuSE 6.2
Greetings all. Last weekend I went out and bought a Voodoo3 (yes I know there is a Voodoo5 but my wallet didn't agree with it! :]) and a Soundblaster Live MP3+. Both of these are pretty high tech from my perspective; I was using an SB AWE64 and a Diamond Stealth 2000 before the purchase. Anyway, there is a 3dfx howto which I've been looking through which has been a lot of yadda yadda blah bla so far. I also discovered there is a 3dfx device in /dev/. Anyone know what that's used for? Also what sort of 3D-related packages are out there from SuSE? Last question is: How does one get an SB Live to work under linux? In windows this thing does SB16 emulation using some funky driver but aparently there is no way to get it to emulate an SB16 under Linux. I don't know too much about 3Dfx on Linux, but as for the Soundblaster Live. I have a SB Live value on my SuSE 6.4 system at home and it works like a champ. 6.4 and I belive 6.3 have the driver which can be obtained from opensource.creative.com. HTH Matthew R. heh...I went from an SiS 6326 to a Banshee and from an ESS AudioDrive (1869, ISA) to an SB Ensoniq (es1371, PCI) about a year ago. WHAT a DIFFERNCE those MADE!
Anyway, there is a 3dfx howto which I've been looking through which has been a lot of yadda yadda blah bla so far. I also discovered there is a 3dfx device in /dev/. Anyone know what that's used for? Also what sort of 3D-related packages are out there from SuSE?
Take the 3Dfx HOWTO and burn it. All of the knowlege you need is contaned in the SuSE Support Database. In short, create a modeline for 640x480@16-bit or 800x600@16-bit in your XF86Config (SaX can do this), install dev3dfx, mesa3dfx and glide_v3, and export one environmental variable in your .bashrc. The SDB article explains very well how all of these work together... http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/hoe_voodoo_3d.html

This is dastardly simple as well. You should be able to install the emu10k1 package from the CDs and simply edit /etc/modules.conf and uncomment the lines for said card. If you run into trouble, check the SDB (http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/swgkern_soundlive.html), or just get ALSA. I prefer the latter ;). ALSA is much more powerful and flexible, and setting it up with PCI sound cards is a real snap. -- -=|JP|=- "Why, oh, why didn't I take the blue pill?"
